The Christmas present ideas thread

I am after ideas for presents for people who like bikes (everyone I know, suddenly).

In particular, I am after something for about 25-30 quid for both my brothers in law.

Share your ideas for the whole forum below. I'm sure we had something on here similar last year and it was incredibly useful.

BTW - I have never done Christmas shopping this early before but I'm likely to have spent all my money in the next week so this seems a good idea.

    Bottle of wine.
    Shaving kit (beaten to it)
    iTunes vouchers
    Woolly jumper
    Socks
    Gaily coloured tie
    chess set
Ticket to see a pop band doing a live jig at a venue near you
    etc.

Do people who ride bikes really want their Christmas presents to be cycling-related? How many times did I have to look pleased at being given a set of bike lights, or more gloves to add to the proper gloves I've already bought? I solved it by letting it be known that actually I really can't imagine any cycling gear that I either need nor want, not in Christmas Present price points anyway. And as buying stuff is widely recognised as a personal treat, why take that treat away from someone by doing it for them? Just my take - misery guts, can't be doing with it, bah humbug etc.

Martin Lewis agrees with me anyway.

Wiggle Voucher - let them buy what they want - they'll also get more for your money in the Jan Sale.

I hate people buying me presents.

I was going to ask for a Park Tools pizza cutter. But it's not really that nice, could be a lot nicer. So I've asked for one of these instead:

Books are safe and easily exchanged if duplicated so if they are into:

Pro-racing - Tyler Hamiltons book or Cav or Wiggo's new books

General cycling/commuting - Bike Maintenance book, think Haines do a good one

Club/Sportive riding - A training book - my mate goes on about the time crunched cyclist.

Touring/Adventure - Either of the Mark Beaumont books - world and americas.

If you want to avoid books then its tougher as the above say if they are into the cycling they probably already have the kit, and better than your budget allows. If they are into racing or sportives then stuff they will constantly buy like gels or energy powders (CNP and SIS stuff) may be appreciated.
  • I like bikes.

If you were looking to buy me a Christmas present in the £25-£30 range, a nice malt whisky would be very well received.

    Just saying.

Cycling stuff for me would now involved a new bike, I think.

    Now after:
    Woolly jumper
    Shaving kit
    Socks
    Pants
Quite want some suede boots/brogues/loafers as mine are a bit tatty now.
Seen some amazing green cords in Gant.....maybe, just maybe.
  • If they've been doing it long enough to have a knackered old favourite, £40 seems pretty reasonable to me ...http://bicycletaxidermy.com/

This is just the ticket, especially if you know the story behind it.

As long as they buy loads of stuff from Wiggle.

I've still got CRC vouchers from last Christmas because everything I've 'needed' this year has been out of stock at CRC or cheaper elsewhere (including at the LBS in some cases)

Someone should invent generic online bike shop vouchers

I think you can redeem them at any shop that does the cyclescheme as it's the same company.

One thing I never mind being given is useful extra lights. Last Christmas I got given one of those Knog Blinder USB things, and I liked it enough to get one for the gf too:

    Circa £20 online.

Anyone confess to running Monkey Lights on their wheel(s)? Now that the dark commutes are back, I'm tempted to give in to my inner 9 year-old and get a set as an early Christmas present. Dom.Sec. thinks that, far from adding to safety, they're more likely to confuse motorists & cause a crash.

    Bueller?

  • I really like the Fibre Flare lights. I was given one for Christmas last year and have given a couple of the mini ones (in various colours) as birthday pressies and they've always gone down well.

I love bikes, and all things cycling.

Things I tend to ask for, and to buy others after weighing up what they have already and the ease to return, is along the following lines:

    Saddle bags
    Mini pumps
    Track pumps
    High quality multi tools
    Socks
    Cadence sensor

I've also asked for stuff such as the Cav world champion t-shirt.
Other cycling related T's from here: http://www.spokeshirts.co.uk/

    And from here: http://www.recycledacc.com/
I have a few bits from there, and bought a fair bit for my gf.

There was another website that was uk based that made stuff out of recycled bike gear, coat hooks, tealight holders, mirrors, sculptures, but I can't seem to find it now....

I have a nice TDF Col du tourmalet t shirt, a couple of Foska jerseys, one a Colmans one, and one an a-z of London.

Some more casual cycling gear - Merlin had loads of Union 34 stuff for around £20.

Other things you could go for could include entry to a sportive, velodrome taster session, tickets to see a velodrome event at Manchester/Glasgow and soon Stratford etc etc.

Training books, books on nutrition etc.

Oodles of stuff out there imho.
    Felt F70 05 (Turbo)
Marin Palisades Trail 91 and 06
    Scott CR1 SL 12

A yearly subscription to 'Cycling Plus' is a one off £39.99 debit transaction
(or if they're mega uber iPaidtoomuch users, the digital edition is £27.99)

I think they may even be giving away a free Lezyne light on subscriptions too!
