Wee hole..
Just taken delivery of Shimano RS10's and notice there is a wee hole on each side of the rims about 1.5mm in dia, same place in front and rear wheel - what's it for?

wear indicator, when it's gone, the rim is dead.0

its a drain hole to allow any water that gets into the wheel on a wet ride to escape.

Drain hole, if you're mad enough to go through a flood or ford you'll notice the water draining out when you get home.0

If it's on the braking surface it's the wear indicator.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

wear indicator is a wee round indent on the rim - the drain hole is a wee hole - RS10s have both wee things on the rim.0

Wot he said ^
The tiny indentations in the brake tracks (diametrically opposite the valve hole, both sides) are the wear indicators; hard to see if the rim's mucky. When they have worn away it means the rim's reached the end of it's useful life.
The little holes which go right through the painted part of the rim are the drain holes; park the bike with these at the bottom after a wet ride, just in case any water needs to exit the rim.0
