brakes - upgrade advice

I am fairly new to mtb and have just started xc racing. I dont have any experience of mtb equipment other than that which came on my xc bike. It is a carrera kracken frame with shimano deore drive and brake levers but with tekro xo mechanical disc brakes. Of late I have been having a lot of problems with the brakes needing constant adjustment and even then i can finish a race without brakes. Even when they are working stopping power is not fantastic. So i think it is time for a change but was hoping to do so with as little spend as possible. Therefore I was hoping to use the deore levers still, and just change the disc brakes, therefore i would need to replace with a better quality mechanical brake, unless of course if the cheaper hydrolic's will still be good and a better alternative so mechanicals. So for those with more experince what would you go for ?

Though for a little extra the Shimano Deore hydro is a god option.

The problem you'll have is that any cable brake is not self adjusting whereas hydraulic are so will compensate for pad wear and stay at their best.

Cable are heavier than hydraulic, I have just about the lightest available (clarks CMD-5) on my commuter yet they are slightly heavier tha the XT's on my MTB which are far from the lightest!

That would be hydraulic, Hayes and Avid 'what' 3's? Oh and while I'm in the mood, avoid.

Shimano Deore M596 are back in stock at CRC for £80 front & rear set without adaptors or rotors but you just use the existing ones on your bike. Grab them before they sell out, at this price it won't take long.
