garmin 800 navigation help

i have just taken delivery of a Garmin 800 edge

I created a course on garmin connect which was simple to do
downloaded it - again simple
found the courses on the my device and selected the course - again simple

However
I was expecting turn by turn guidance on the route - not simple

I knew where i was going roughly but spent the entire time tapping the screen to reactivate the backlight and squinting at the map on the screen to identify which is the road highlighted for my route. Not ideal.

After such rave reviews i am well resigned to the fact that I am being a mug and there must be a simple solution, but nowhere can i see the idiots guide to finding the idiots guide to the garmin 800!!

i have found guides to customise the training screen which has been a great help but still left unsure how to get turn by turn advice on a course i have created?

Have you turned the navigation on? Sounds daft, but if you select the course in your garmin, then press the spanner icon in the bottom left corner, you will then see the second box down has 'TURN GUIDANCE ON/OFF'. Select - on, and away you go.

Common error, did it myself 1st time. Irritating but you'll need to do it just once for each new course you upload.

i thought I had been through the setup screens during the setup and selected guidance on - but will definately have a look later.

When i selected the course I had designed it flashed up saying "turn by turn naviagtion available" with an "OK" beneath it - kept bashin the "OK" but still didnt get me the result I wanted.

So kind of assumed I had done what was needed - but best not to assume and will give you tip a go later this evening. Thank you

You have to enable turn-by-turn navigation for each route you download as well as globally. Once you have selected your route but before you start your ride you need to go into the settings for THAT route and activate turn-by-turn navigation. Once that is done it should work.

To be honest I've not tried creating a course on the Garmin site. I always use ridewithgps.com and create a gpx file to upload, never had an issue and my Garmin 800 has never asked me if I want turn by turn navigation, so not sure about that bit! It's always worked automatically once I've turned the guidance on for the course file

It's as Claude says. You have to turn it on for each course you download, but once done you shouldn't need to redo it for that course again (unless you delete it from the unit and download it again!)

How to do it is as per ajb's instructions.

Loads of people seem to struggle with course navigation on the edge 800.
The instruction manual doesn't really help much, does it?
I wrote up my settings here, and the article includes loads of screenshots to guide you through it all.
It works for me, so I hope someone else finds it useful too
