I know there will be various threads re: turbo's but didn't want to hunt them down.

My question is:- going to invest in a turbo for winter, any advice re: which one greatly appreciated, approx £150-£200, do i need a specific tyre for the trainer ? i think i have read somewhere that they knacker your tyres in ? if so, do people just get a spare back wheel with a trainer tyre on ?

Thanks in advance

  • You don't really need a turbo specific tyre just use an old one. I have a bike set up on mine and I'll ride it on the road when the weather is half decent in winter (dry days) so I have a conti ultragator skin on it. I can't even remember what make my turbo is but I paid about £160 for it and it's had plenty of stick over the last four years.

Yes - an old tyre is fine. If you are using the turbo with your only bike, you may wish to purchase a spare wheel & cassette (2nd hand is fine) to use solely for the turbo & save you having to change tyres each time -other wise its pretty quick to change the tyre and great practise for changing tyres which you eventually P******e on the road!!
My turbo is a Tacx Satori - pretty basic but i use in conjunction with my Garmin 500 which gives me all the data & read out information i need.
IMO a turbo is a turbo, others seems to have more gizmo's and electronic readout information attached as you go up the cost scale, but if your current computer can supply you with all this info, I dont see why you need to spend big money.

Decathlon are doing the Tacx Satori with floor mat, front wheel support and DVD for £129.99. LBS is selling the exact same package for £335! Turbo tyre will be smoother, quieter, shed less rubber and last longer, but not a necessity.
