New helmet

Rather irritated that someone nicked my cheap Tesco helmet, with knackered lining - why?! Anyway, it was due replacing anyway, so any good deals round at the moment? I'd like to keep it under £40 if possible - any replacement should be better than my Tescos job, and I'm not fit enough at the moment that weight/aero of a helmet will be significantly holding me back :)

I know the best thing would be to try them on at my LBS to check for fit. However, their prices are often a big chunk more than buying online (and I feel bad trying things on there then buying online) - so will gamble on ordering unseen, and return the helmet if it doesn't fit.

  • I tried on a Giro Indicator helmet at Halfords (£40), and then bought it from Amazon for £23. About a month ago.

Another recommendation for the Giro Indicator from me. In fact, I think it might have been me who recommended it to Chris, above. Or if you're willing to spend a few pounds more, there are some good deals around on the Savant, reviewed here at the moment.

Lazer O2, £48 in Wiggle at the moment.
Fits well, adjustable wheel to tweak the tightness, looks good (not massively mushroom like!).
    Cheers, Stu

It was indeed - my thanks for that. I'd forgotten already (had to find the original thread to check  ) - can't believe how much has happened bike-wise in one short month :)

Giro Savant, top lid for under 50 quid! Is the indicator a mtb lid or a dual removable peak thing?

It does have a removable peak. I leave mine on - it's quite handy with the low sun at the moment.

Ahh yes, I did try one of those too in halfords, but I find the peak on the road bike tends to make a lot of wind noise, so I went for the savant. I use cycling sun glasses anyway so don't really need the peak.

Checkout LAS helmets, I got the Squalo, very impressive for the money, preferred it over my Giro Ionos which cost 3 times more. Lots of features, they have a nice soft protector on the neck strap, an integrated fly mesh, and inner padding that is in only 3 parts, so easy for washing. Good ventilation and good fitting system, with wheel adjuster and height adjuster. No mushroom issues. For a bit more is the Victory, much liked by Cycling Plus, comes with a detachable peak if you want one.

Thanks. Savant is around £40 it seems - seems a decent deal, but worth the extra over the Indicator?

Not sure whether I'll miss the peak - seem to spend too much time riding into the low afternoon sun these days.

A cheap cycling cap to go underneath provides a more versatile option than a MTB-style plastic peak.

It also seemed a slighy better fit for me which was a bit strange, maybe check out the indicator without the peak on, see if its ok. Side note, the savante was also for me a better colour option :-)

Thanks for the advice. Like the Indicator in blue/black http://www.amazon.co.uk/Giro-Indicator- ... 216&sr=8-5 so think I'll give that a go first and see if it fits. If not, try the Savant.

Does that seem sensible? The weight difference is pretty negligible, and can't see any major problems to the Indicator - unless I'm missing something...

The pictures of it are nice, but I didn't like the blue when I tried it in Halfords. Very unsubtle I thought. I got the black/white red one. YMMV :)

Whatever you do, don't buy a Giro Monza. The 'Roc Loc' is a fragile piece of sh*t, believe me, I've had three of them (two warranty repplacements) break within 6 months.

Specialized Echelons are good, and their 'Headset' (similar to the Giro 'Roc Loc' ) is well tough.

Specialized helmets are tested to a higher standard than other helmets available in the UK, complying with Snell / CPSC which requires off the shelf testing (rather than manufacturer provided samples) and more than double the impact resistance of the EN1078 standard. So this is a good reason for choosing Specialized over other brands.

OK - sold! Was tempted to go for the red, anyway, and that colour's a quid cheaper.

Indicator arrived. Lighter than the Tescos one and more vents, but not sure about it - the under-ear straps feel awkward, though don't know if that's just a matter of fiddling with them/getting used to them...
