hi,
i'm totally new to bike mechanics (although a competent car diy machanic)
the largest chain ring is worn to the point that i get chain slip so i need to replace it. Do you buy the rings separately, or all 3 together? It looks like they are riveted together.
I guess i should replace the chain too. Does anyone know what length chain i would need? I know i need to get a chain tool.
Also, i may try replacing the crank bearings as they creak a bit. Is this a fairly easy job?
Can anyone point me to a one-stop-shop to get all the parts i need for a resonable price.
Thanks in advance
kevin

if they are rivited then you need a new crankset.
whatever length the fiiting instructions say. around both big cogs without the rear mech and add one full link."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If they're riveted you need a new crankset. Might as well get a Shimano Deore, comes with a bottom bracket. You'll need the BB shell faced by your LBS and either a Hollowtech BB tool, or get the LBS to fit it when they face it.
Chain - KMC whatever size you need (8 speed?). Measure when on bike - around big ring, big cog (not around the rear mech) plus a full link.
Try Chain Reaction Cycles, and look in 'Read this first' below for tech info.I don't do smileys.

Depends on fittings, if it's a basic crankset with riveted rings then you need to change the lot, cranks and rings complete (you'll need the crank removal tool), if the bottom bracket is creaking then you'll need to replace that as well, an easy job but you need the removal tool. As you'll be changing the lot it leaves you some scope to get whatever you want.
I wouldn't suggest the Deore given what you say but sticking with Square taper (almost certainly what you have now)
You'll need a chain splitter to shorten the new chain, sizing instructions will come with the chain!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
