Hi all.

My Chorus square taper BB has just started knocking. Are the bearing replaceable or is it time for a complete new cartridge?

Cheers,

Jon

  • New BB Im afraid
  • That's boring.

Ho hum. Hasn't completely died yet. Might just about get me through the winter...

I had a feeling when I fitted it about 5, maybe 6 years ago that it looked rather more disassembleable than a Shimano one, so I might pop it out and have a poke anyway. Campag, being much smaller than Shimano won't have access to quite so much specialist forging/tooling kit, so I wouldn't be surprised to find there's a pair of boggo cartridge bearings in there, if you can just get to them.

What makes you think that Campagnolo assembles components, while Shimano make their own? Campagnolo is legendary for making use of parts that they make and that can only be sourced from them... through the years they went a long way to make sure everything was a hassle to source... from the 3.5 mm Allen Key for the Delta brakes, to the impossible to find tool to remove a Power Torque crank (back in the 2010)... to the UT bearings which have a size you will only find from them

Replaced my Campagnolo BB this week. I bought a Campag fit Tifosi cartridge for £25 from my LBS. Seem to be highly rated quality wise, weight is comparable to the Chorus BB and the price is much reduced, so there are alternatives.

Having pulled one apart, there's little in there that's user serviceable - but you have to go some to wear one out!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

They used to have the decency to provide spares for the expensive parts, like Ergos (not for a BB)... but I am not sure this will be the case in the future... I think it is a counterproductive policy for them as they don't make money and the competition does not offer spares
