Front Mech Compatibility

Please help - I’m having problems sourcing the correct front derailleur (FD) for a Ribble road bike I inherited recently.

Groupset is the 'old' Shimano Ultegra 6500, with a compatible 105 5505 Octalink triple 9speed chainset and Ultegra flight deck shifters.

My independent local bike shop recommended sourcing a 9 speed brazed-on FD but couldn't confirm which model is compatible??!

Also, is it advisable to fit using a Shimano braze-on adaptor? I ask because I’m told braze-on FD's have a habit of coming away from the frame when under pressure?

Braze-on derailleurs are not especially unreliable AFAIK. What's wrong with the old derailleur?

    Anyway, this'd do the job.

Thanks for your help, though I'm still confused?

    If I have a triple/ 9 speed set-up, surely a Shimano 105 5600 Double 10sp FD wouldn't be compatible?

Any thoughts on using an adapter to mount?

Thanks Simon - would this work with the triple set-up though?

You're right. I misread your post; thought you had a double.

Because you should have 52/42/30 rings on that chainset then you need an older front mech. The new triple front mechs swing differently and can catch the middle ring. These ones on Ebay would do the job -

    105 Triple Braze On

    Tiagra Triple Braze On

Cheers Mister P - would you suggest mounting using one of these?

I ask because my local bike shop were making noises about braze-on FD's coming away from the bike frame too easily? :?:

Does your frame have a braze on mount? If it does then use it, if not use an adaptor.

It does but I'm concerned the threads are shot to bits, hence it won't secure the FD correctly!

Braze on mounts themselves aren't inherently unstable, but if you're worried about the threads you could get them retapped.
