Yeah Royles have got some cracking deals on.

  • What's the best way to build these up? Quite a few places do decent groupset offers but they're all with "normal" BB chainsets. I guess the options are:

    1) buy a standard groupset and use an adaptor (losing the benefit of BBright)
    2) pick all the other bits up individually and get a BBright chainset separately
    3) buy a groupset, flog the chainset and buy a BBright chainset?

I've never built a bike up from a frame but it seems quite an expensive way of doing things compared to buying a complete bike. This chainset issue seems to just add that bit more to the cost.

What have people done who've bought these?

Quite tempted but probably just being sucked in by the never to be repeated, 50% off etc etc.
  • you can run pretty much any chainset now as adapters are available for specific BB's e.g. rotor shimano BB etc I'm running Shimano DA and just in the process of building the frame up. You do need tools to do the job properly if you do it yourself, e.g. press, head tube cutter as well as the need to loctite in the BB and gluing in the alu insert to the steerer etc.

The frame is an absolute bargain at half price, I can't believe how much lighter it is then my spesh roubaix, 1st ride will be tomorrow once my BB loctite has cured over night ....v excited.

I do think that if I had the choice I would choose a threaded BB design over any press-fit, I think press-fit is to the benefit of the manufacturer really as its simpler and cheaper to make. Yes its lighter but as a design I just think its a step back over.....all top end frames are going or have gone this way so what can you do?

  • Speshsteve - have you bought one of these then?

Did you manage to get it from the UK?

    What press did you need?

    Thanks
  • yep, I bought from slane cycles and I have just installed this today.

I used the cyclus headset press from Wiggle along with the FSA bb30 installation bushes. I used loctite 7649 primer and 709 and then used the headset press and bushes to install the BB.

You need to leave this to cure over 24 hours and then you should be good to go...I'll let you know how this goes after the next few days and miles...hoping for smooth creak free install..I'm racing a duathlon in 3 weeks time so it needs to be right for that!

I bought my R5 last week from wiggle, I think they kick started the 50% deal online just over a week ago. This will be my new summer bike for 2013, I'm looking now for all the other parts to build the bike. I have to say I think this is the only way to build a bike. I wouldn't buy a bike straight off the peg as there is always something I wouldn't like.

When I bought my last frame look 595 ultra the BB and GPX group sets didn't really exist, I'm aware the R5 requires a BB group but from reading above are we saying the chainset won't be any good? Why?

    Thanks

I'm using a Campag record chainset with the appropriate adaptors with my R5 and it's perfectly fine. I doubt you'd notice the difference over a native BBright chainset.

I do also have the Rotor chainset which came with the frameset (with the 30mm axle) in case I decide to go back to a 52/39 (or in case someone makes me a decent offer for it!)
  • if you look on the cervelo website there is a whole section on BBright including a matrix which shows:

    1. BBright Chainsets
    2. Adapters available for non BBright

You can now run almost any chainset, my Shimano DA was a very straight forward install as long as you follow the advice re loctite and use a press.
