Hi,
I've killed a set of planet x model c wheels in less than 18 months of pretty much daily riding.
What shall I replace them with? Looking to get either a pair or just a rear wheel.
Something that wont break the bank and will hopefully last a bit better?
Thanks for any suggestions!

How did you wear out the Model Cs? Rim failure or hub failure or both?- - - - - - - - - -

I'd go something that's built with regular bits by a wheelbuilder - something like 105 hubs on open pro as above, but if you're after something a bit 'different' and your budget will stretch, get some velocity a23 rims built up. Nice.0

Thanks for replies. What sort of price would a set of open pros and 105's be?
What sort of life should I expect from a set of wheels used daily in all weathers?DesWeller wrote:How did you wear out the Model Cs? Rim failure or hub failure or both?
A few months ago the front bearings went so I replaced them.
Now the rear hub has gone (in that the cassette has gone sloppy, making gears jump, irrespective of how tight the cassette or axle is tightened). Does that make them terminal?
The rims dont look (or feel) great either, but am unsure how worn is too worn as there are no wear indicators?
The freehub is also mashed where the cassette has chewed into it. Had to get the cassette off with a hammer.
There is also a touch of play in the rear bearings.0 -
If the Model C uses the same Novatec Superlight hubs as the Model B then the bearings can be replaced. It's a fairly straightforward process.
If you have a set of calipers then you can assess the rim thickness by using something of known thickness (e.g. a bent spoke) to space the caliper jaw out from the hook in the rim (I hope that makes sense, I have not described it very well). 1mm is about as low as you want to go.
As for the freehub...unfortunately once they start to get chewed then they tend to get worse over time. If you get a new wheel make sure you get one with a steel freehub if it bothers you.
Lifespan for a set of light-ish all-weather wheels is probably around 10, 000 miles if the hubs are looked after. The hubs that PX use in their wheels do tend to be a bit vulnerable to the weather but that can be worked around.
ETA: There is a drawing of the Superlight hub here and a thread about their refurbishment here.- - - - - - - - - -

For the last 4 years I have commuted 20 miles almost every day and only had the bike serviced once a year, I assume they have adjusted the wheels but I don't know for sure.
I only clean the bike one a week at most and my wheels have been totally bombproof and have never needed truing, they are Shimano WH-R500's.
A bit like the Duracell bunny they go on and on and on...
I have other bikes with lighter wheels but would recommend these for commuting any day, cheap and reliable. What more do you need?0 -

Or these, R501?

Seem to be good reviews out for these and very cheap.0 -
Either of those should be okay, according to the Shimano blurb they are built for cyclo cross so that is probably why they are so strong.0

If you are hard on your equipment as you probably are, Shimano hubs are a good choice, especially Ultegra... then maybe a hard wearing rim, like Ambrosio Excursion or Rigida Chrina... Open PRO are a bit thin for winter abuse... they won't be light... just under 2 Kg, but they will ride well and feel much lighter than the scale says with the correct spoke choice.
Under 200 pounds with 105 hubs and a bit more with Ultegra?left the forum March 20230 -
I went for the shimano r501s from ribble for 71 quid. One ride on they seem alright.
Today ribble have a 10% off code for all wheels, they'd be a right bargain for 64!0
