Shifting 4 gears with one click

Hi,

My girlfriend was complaining her bike was not shifting properly over the weekend, having taken a closer look this morning a single click on the shifter moves the derailler down 4 cogs (ie 4 larger from smaller!). I'm at loss to explain this anyone got any ideas (seems to big a jump to be cable tension surely)?

    A "full" press can jump up 3 I think, while a gentle click does one at a time. (depends what gears they are?). I assume its that with you saying 4 larger from smaller?

    from smaller to larger, didn't realise however that you should be able to jump three in one click though! Explains a lot (in that i'm sure a bit of barrel adjustment can cure it now!)
