i have a bianchi road bike and i am wondering what winter tyres to use, was out this morning and on steep hills my back wheel was spinning as i was pedalling and it was a bit hairy on the damp patches on corners, my tyres are vittoria zaffira's 700x 23. are 25's better, cheers

  • I always use continental ultragator skins.

Good puncture protection and low rolling resistance (relatively speaking)

Conti gp4000s all year round for me. Some winter tyres are like riding on ice as soon as it gets wet anyway. The 4000s are the best trade off for grip, puncture proofness and durability. The other ones I would also use are Michelin krylions or vittoria open pave
  • If you budget will stretch I would use Vittoria Open Paves over the winter, really grippy - they are the preferred tyre for many of the spring classics such as the Paris - Roubaix.

+1 agree ----have also been using GP 4000 4seasons recently, very good grippy tyre much impressed; Gatorskins by contrast much less grip.

IME Krylions will give most mileage, > 2 000 miles, Open Pave I`ll get < 1 500 miles from rear, and GP 4000 4s are showing signs waer at 500 miles. Krylions may be hard to get hold off as discontinued but by far cheapest to buy and run.

A lot of folk seem to advocate harder tyres for winter to resist punctures. I run snow tyres on my car half the year and the rubber compound is much softer than summers, so that when it's cold it'll still dig into the road surface and grip.

I'll be on Specialized Rouabaix tyres this winter. Light, puncture resistant and grippy.

  • Michelin Pro 4 Endurance are excellent. The successor to the Krylion. Roll better IMO.

But, for winter, I'd go 25c rather than 23c. Every little helps.

Are not 25 c now teh cycling answer to `sliced bread` too ? wider profile rims and wider tyres >>> reduced rolling resistnace AND more comfort on poorly maintained road surfaces :):)
