Mavic hubs - 10 speed cassette

Evening everyone. Picked up a second hand of Mavic Aksiums with Shimano compatible Mavic hubs. I've gone to fit my 10speed Shimano cassette on, however, the cap of the cassette does not screw in tight to the gears causing the smaller loose ones to rattle, I am a novice, but I know that ain't right! Its like the hub is too long for the cassette. My basic knowledge makes me think that the hub is compatible for say, 12 speed, but I didn't know that that was a choice - you don't get that option when you buy them new. Am I doing something really stupid!??? Would really appreciate any help or advice - please remember, I'm a relative novice, so please go easy on me! Thanks in advance for your advice.
