Hello

I am sick of getting punctures on my commute to work. I have been looking a continental Gotorskins, are these any good? Has anyone else got any other reccomendations?

Thanks

Not tried them but Schwalbe Blizzard sport are good and cheap. A little heavier than normal tyres but good puncture resistance. I have used them for 2 winters and only had 1 puncture (and that was a dirty great big screw)

Also it could be that you are getting pinch flats (tube pinching against rim due to low pressure) , You need to make sure your tyres are pumped up quite hard. Most 23/25c tyres can go to 100 PSI which offers a good mix of speed / comfort will smaller chance of pinch punctures. The side wall of the tyres will show suggested pressures aim for about 90% of the max, remember to add an extra 1 or 2 pumps to allow for some leakage when you remove the pump and briefly breaks the valve seal.

Another trick is to remove the tyres and tubes and on the inside of the tyres run a few revolutions of standard electrical tape. This works a charm on my Schwalbe R.1 tyres (very light thin tyres) and gives some degree of puncture resistance. It only adds about 30g to the weight but stops small detritus getting through any cuts in the tyre thread.

    Hope this helps.

Used to suffer punctures on my commute and there is nothing worse especially when it is raining(which it usually is)

Changed to Gatorskins a few years ago and have not had a puncture since you just don't get them anymore well I don't anyway.

As eddy says make sure they are correctly inflated, this is really important.

They are also great for crappy roads.
Currently I have been mostly riding a Specialized Roubaix Comp

I use cheap Schwalbe Lugano's off of ebay and with the right pressures I have only had one puncture in the last 18 months

It does depend on the roads you ride on and how many miles you do. I find Gator skins work well on crappy roads but even gator can puncture. Flint knapping with the front wheel normally does it for me. The roads in rural Suffolk are really bad.

Certainly Gatorskins are pretty decent - I use 25mm ones and they aren't much fatter than 23mms but give that bit more comfort, I've also used Bontrager RACE All Weather (25mm also) and they did me fine, not as fast as the Conti's but ok and sturdy enough.
Tend to run tyres no lower than 100psi to minimise pinch-flats but over 110psi on crappy roads and they give just too hard a ride for me.
  • Yeh, i can vouch for Gatorskins. They are quite tight to get on initially but i have never punctured with these as my winter/commute tyre. Quite decent running speed given the weight also. Worth getting if piece of mind against punctures is what you want- which for a commute you probably do.
  • I'm happy with Gatorskins too - I have had punctures with them but they have all been pinch flats after hitting massive rocks at high speed.

I use Michelin Krylion carbons almost bombproof and hardly ever get a puncture.
