Ive just taken delivery of some 52mm carbon clinchers from planet x - very nice

Anyway I have been scouring the net for some tubes with long valves - plenty around - a bit more than i usually pay for tubes mind ! - Planet x are recommending valves extenders over tubes - personally I would have thought tubes with a 80mm valve would be suitable for the job - just wondering if extenders offer any hidden benefits? - as I see it

Extenders pro's:-
Buy once can then be sed with cheaper tubes
No need to carry a spare tube

Cons
A bit fiddly
Rattling when riding

Tubes pros
Neat no mess solution

Tubes cons
Cost (on going)
Need to buy 3 tubes - at least

Any thoughts ?
Also ..do all extenders work with all tubes ? -
Some people have also said you can get an adapter - just to pump up the tyres - can't see how that would work myself - but any info welcome.

Personally, i have tubes with removable cores and a park tools vc-1 tool which makes changing the cores over incredibly easy.

I then carry when out using the wheels a normal tube with a removable core, my vc-1 and a topeak valve extender as a back up.

The vc-1 is tiny, and you can change a core in around 30seconds using it.

The reason i carry a topeak valve extender is in case i have to beg a tube off someone else.

I think youre over-egging the yolk mate...'rattling around in the bag?" come on!! as opposed to what? ..'stone chips 'chipping' against your bike frame'

    ffs

It doesnt matter what you get, extenders 'extend' the valve thats there. job done.

New tubes with longer valves. Job done.

Youre creating a problem thats not there. You get a puncture, you need to inflate, you inflate.

If you cant afford new tubes then buy the extenders. If you dont like the idea of extenders then buy new tubes. Surely, if you can afford new 50mm tyres from Planet X, you can afford either extenders or new inner tubes for a couple of quid??????

    its not rocket science.

And there was me thinking forums were a place to get help + advice - hence the 'buying advice' forum ?

1.I actually meant do the extenders rattle whilst on the bike - and I beleive you have misquoted me as I never mentioned a bag.

2.Not all extenders fit all tubes - so not quite a straightforward as you suggest

3.The reason I can afford the wheels - is that I do my research before making a purchase - sure I could have just 3 tubes for £25

i prefer long valves to extenders, one less joint

rattle can occur with either, but it's easily fixed with a bit of thin sleeving or some tape

if your tubes have removable cores, extenders are fine, i'm not so keen on the 'open' ones that go over the existing valve, but maybe that's just me, probably they are fine too

Sungod i agree about the go over the top extender, i carry one for an emergency in case i have to borrow a tube off someone.
  • I have just fitted a set of valve extenders to the same wheel set, no problems at all. Just remember to add a little ptfe tape to the threads.
