Spin wheel and get vibration at bars

I'm slowly trying to get a Carrera Gryphon I got cheap on ebay fixed up.

When I spin the front wheel on a workstand, it's true and does not rub the brake pads, but I get a slight vibration through the bars.

How can I fix this?

  • My initial thoughts are that the bearings are either rough or loose.
Check that the nuts holding the bearings in place are tight and re-try. Failing that take the wheel apart inspect the bearings to see if they seem rough to the feel. Put everything back together with a healthy dose of grease and try again. If it's still the same look to swap the bearings out or put the wheel into your LBS, they'll do this for you, total cost including bearings should be around £20-£30.

If you take the wheel out and hold it you can turn the spindle between finger and thumb and feel how smooth (or not) it runs.

Basic but relatively accurate initial check for bearing wear.

If the wheel is radially out of true then you'll get an imbalance.

  • I think I will try and get a bigger front chainring which again should pull the rear wheel slightly closer.

I used to have this issue. But didn't know what exactly was causing it. My hub shell was damaged and wheel was slightly out of true. Got the wheel warrantied and problem solved. However I later sold it and upgraded.
