CWNTs Rockhopper Winter bike

Just been and picked up this little beauty found on the local classifieds.
Paid less than £200 for it, and for that, I think it's bargain of the year.
The whole bike has clearly been VERY well looked after, the chap I was buying off had some pretty impressive bikes in his garage, along with a well stocked workshop, which was reassuring. The whole thing really does feel very smooth indeed.
It will be used mostly for turbo trainer and commuter duties to begin with. But in the depths of winter, I may well decide to swap the wheels over from the Reed and do a bit of XC on it.
It's an 07 (I think) Rockhopper Comp Disk, spec is something along the lines of:
19" M4 Frame
Tora 302 forks
Shimano hubs on Alex rims (both branded as Specialized)
Deore Shifters (9x3)
LX Rear mech
Juicy 3 brakes
Truvativ finishing kit
Specialized Nimbus 1.5 tyres

no it isn't, if it was a pro disc it would have a reba fork, juicy 5's and xt rear mech, check the link to the archive, it came in gloss blue and satin black, the truvativ stuff was probably added by the former ownerpaul.skibum wrote:07 Pro Disc actually in that colour! Well 1 week of communting under my belt on the hopper and it's all positive. It's only a short commute (couple of miles each way) but it's all downhill on the way in, and all uphill on the way back. These are proper hills too. I'm a fair bit quicker on this than I am on the Reed, so that's good. Must figure out how to mount a mudguard on the rear for when the weather gets REALLY shltty.
Decided to do a road ride today rather than go out on the MTB as my knee is still a little bit iffy and I want to give it time to mend properly this time. Did 37miles and 1,100m of climbing in 3hr3min. Including beating my PB on a couple of road sections I've done before on the reed.
I'm perfectly satisfied with everything on the bike so far. Although down the line I may look to swap stuff to make it a bit lighter. Currently weighs 28.4lb, which makes it about a lb heavier than the reed. Of course, almost all that weight will be in the forks and the wheels, so perhaps a nice set of kona P2s and a superstar wheelset down the road. Then again, I may just save the money to put towards a "proper" roady in the new year.
One thing I had to change was the seatpost. Had to swap the 350mm spesh one for my old 400mm Bionicon one as it was too short by about 15mm. The bionicon one is old and VERY beat up, and looks it too. but it works fine, so it's al good.
Overall, £200 VERY well spent imho!!

So far it's only been on the turbo, done the commute, and the long road ride today.
I will be buying a conversion kit from superstar for the hubs on the reed so I can just swap the wheels over (and cassette & discs) onto this in deepest winter. I'd rather do it that way because then I get to carry on using the good wheels off the good bike (which weigh significantly less that the ones on the hopper), I get to keep using my tubeless setup, and I don't have to splash out on near enough £100 worth of rubber. Before I do though, I need to check how much of a PITA it is to swap the X12 fitting over to a regular QR, as I understand it, it's not as simple as just switching one cap for another, and requires some internal gubbins to be moved about.
It is making me really, REALLY want a proper road bike though.0 -

The following upgrades have now been made:
Fork: Kinesis Maxlight XLT - 810g - Light and stiff.
Wheels: Superstar Superleggera hubs on superstar XC rims - 1770g and 120pt engagement (like the good wheels on the Reed)
Tyres: 1.35" Schwalbe Durano - 400g each and fast rolling
Saddle: Charge Spoon - Mmmm, comfy
Bars: Exotic Scandium Flat bar - 560mm - 115g stupid light, comfy for the road, might get some bar ends.
Grips: Ritchey WCS Foam ergo shape - 36g, pretty light, dead comfy, good for quietening road buzz.
Chainset: New Shimano Deore HTII - 26-36-48, much lighter than the octolink chainset, and bigger gears for the road and flatter xc stuff.
Also got a new chain and cassette, and a superstar seatpost, although they've sent me a red one instead of the black on I ordered.
Got some road pedals to stick on there too.
So that's about it. The hopper has now been roadified. I've still got the old bits though, and will be stripping down the forks and wheels and servicing them so they're ready for me to just grab them and swap over when I want to go offroad.
Pics will follow as soon as I've been down to the lbs tomorrow and got them to chop the steerer down and fit the crown race and the starnut. I'm also waiting on another octalink BB tool as my old one has run away.
I've managed to drop 1.25kg off the wheels/tyres/tubes, and another 1.4kg off the forks. With all the other stuff, I reckon it'll be around 20-21lb (with pedals). I'd love sub-20, but it's not very realistic I don't think.
For the money though, I could have just bought a new Canyon road bike or something. However, the plan is to use this for communting and winter duties, then grab myself a decent roadbike for a bit more money in the new year.0 -

Kind of similar to my commuter then!
Carrera Gryphon frame, rigid alloy forks (Onza smart guy 853g), Stronglight 46T SS chainset on a square BB, 26x1.5 tyres (Ribmo front, WTB Slickasaurus rear - about 500g each), Gripshift and crosstop levers to declutter the carbon bars, wheels were cheapies on M475 hubs, Sun Equalizer rear rim Mavic 117 front, Saddle is of course a Spoon!
Avenir grips at just 16g with bar ends (same as Pork rinds for sub £10)
Weighs in at 9.75Kg without rack and guards.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

Honestly, I have no idea. just removed the old wheels with tyres, tubes and cassette fitted because they're being used on the turbo. weighed them in 1 go. I weighed all the new parts individually, then I weighed both wheels together once fully set up.
I'd guess at about 300g on the wheels, that'd put the old ones at 2,100g for the set (new ones out of the box with rim tape were 1800g).0 -

Finally got round to taking some daylight pics today as I've cleaned both bikes with a view to putting the Bionicon away through winter and switching to just using the Rockhopper. I've been using it a lot lately, really starting to enjoy road riding. Getting my Strava on and actually making a reasonable dent in the leaderboards.
The purpose of this bike was to provide a solid, rapid commuter bike that is not completely out of it's depth on longer road rides on a weekend, winter training stylee, and also to see if I'd take to road riding (being the hardcore, rad, sick MTB dude I am).
Mission accomplished there I'd say.
Next step now is to get christmas out of the way then get me a proper roady and maybe get a couple of races done.
Not a massive fan of the grips mind. They look wierd and I don't realy find them more comfortable than regular foamy grips. I did wonder for a while if I'f fitted them the wrong way round, but apparently not.

I've always found their stuff to be excellent.
www.carboncycles.cc is their main webby. There is also an ebay shop.
I'm a big fan of their scandium stuff, and also their pedals, which are the same as superstar nanos, but for a bit less.
Not a fan of carbon stems tbh, they are mostly an aesthetic thing.0 -

My proper roadie is on the way now. As such, I'm pleased to announce the hopper is going back to (almost) as it was intended to be.
Essentially, all I've done so far is treat her to some new shoes.
2x Racing Ralph 2.25 Gatestar, Snakeskin, Double defence. They're TLR tyres, but running with tubes.
I intend on swapping out the grips, and at some point, it'll be getting the X9 groupset off the Reed when I finally get round to buying the new XT Group I've been saying I'll get since last year.
Will continue to run rigid for now. This is mostly for short, fast, local XC blasts and general Strava bagging.
Weight as she stands (with pedals) 11.1kg (24.5lb).
Sorry for the quality of the pics, I'm still trying to get to grips with my new camera.

If you stick a bouncy fork on it, dibs on the rigid one! I liked it built up in roadie mode but you will see the benefit from a proper road bike. What have you gone for?
