FSA crankbolt removal/crankarm wobble
Hi people,
Looking for some advice on people with some firsthand experience of FSA/megaexo chainset and the removal of the crankarms/tightening it up to remove some play.
The crankset is an older style K-Force megaexo.
The crankset and BB was installed 12-18 months by a LBS and has been on my time trial bike frame.
A month or so ago there started to be a bit of play in the left hand (non-drive side) crankarm.
If you hold the driveside crankarm, the left hand crankarm can move forward or backwards (direction of pedal travel) but about 1mm.
There is no side to side play.
I don't have the instructions but have seen online ones and they just mention about installation, not removal.
Anyhow,
From what I can find out people say to just remove the crankarm bolt with the right size allen key, which I've got, but I can not get it to turn either clockwise or counter clockwise.
Any ideas?
I have managed to remove the dust cap with a pair of pliers (pictured below) but again, with this removed there is still no way of getting the crankbolt moving.
Again - any ideas?
Picture below that might help

(with dust cap removed.
Thanks,
Dru

The part you removed is part of the self extracting bolt setup, put it back in then use an 8mm allen key in the hole that's showing in your picture. Left to loosen & remove, right to tighten the arm. If you can't move it then get a longer allen key or a pipe over your existing one for more leverage.0

muchos gracias!
Will need to go find a pipe then0 -
so tightening this will remove the play if the play is coming from the crankarm - correct?0

I have very similar ones (FSA team issue) and they're a bit crap for coming loose, mine have had a mm of play left/right almost since new. I'm always having to check them every month or so, the 28nm they state never holds them so I've resorted to tightening as tight as possible. Just tried undoing mine and they came loose with a 8" allen key but it wasn't too easy.
So yes it should remove the play unless there's a bigger problem, like a dying bb or worn spline.0 -
Well,
I've managed to turn it a few more degrees with a pipe over the allen key but the play is still there. Will drop it down the LBS to see what the prognosis is.
Thanks for your help Salsa.

I ended up sending mine back to FSA (via Planet-X). Fairly sure the same model.
Had play, like you describe and there seemed no reason or fix for it. Final straw was when the piece holding the pedal treads came a bit loose too.
Don't think this is a very good chainset. They replaced it (eventually) with a much better version, but I chucked on eBay and got myself a Dura Ace one. Not as pretty, but so simple and effective.0
