Garmin Edge 500 getting on my tits now!
As you can tell, I'm not happy. I'm seriously frustrated with this stupid device and I wonder why it won't connect to Garmin itself.
I'm trying to upload my last ride but this message appears: TypeError: Cannot read property 'nodeValue' of undefined
I mean seriously, what is wrong with it? I've downloaded and installed the plug ins but am somehow having trouble with everything else. The garmin is connected via USB (if that helps).
Never had this problem with a garmin device before. Please help!

Best post this on Garmin's own forum or see Frank Kinlan's blog for more help than you'll probably get here. FWIW here are some suggestions:
1) Are you sure your device is connecting to your PC? Try a different USB connector if you can't see the PC image on the device screen.
2) Has it got very wet recently especially under the protective covers? That can cause all sorts of weird stuff to happen. My 705 did and took a week to recover - working fine now.
3) Re-install the firmware. Save your data first.
4) Email garmin support in Southampton. In my experience they are pretty good and will have other suggestions.
5) If it's within 12 months old it should be covered by Garmin's warranty so if all fails send it back there.
6) If it's outside warranty you need to pay about £100 to get it looked at by Garmin and fixed or replaced.0 -
Are you using google Chrome? If you are try a different web browser and see what happens.0

Thanks for your response.
1) Yes, 100%
2) No, I purchased it today and used it for a short ride on this dry day0 -
Tried it now on Chrome, I.E, and Firefox to no avail0

You could try using Garmin Training Centre to retrieve the ride information from your device, and then export the .TCX file and upload that to Garmin Connect, Strava, Runkeeper or whatever else you use for analysis.
It could also be that the ride data, or a garmin settings file, is corrupted in some way.
I've seen the following posted on t'internet as a possible solution (ref: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.ph ... post143374)
I don't know what exactly this does, so you might want to manually backup the activities / courses directories before you do it, in case it's a factory reset procedure. After much tooing and froeing between me and support, including the installation of firefox, nothing worked. Then they suggested hard reset
Power device off
Press and hold Page/Menu, Start/Stop and Power simultaneously
This resolved the issue0 -
Chrome should be fine. Which operating system are you using? When you connect your Garmin does it show up as removable storage called 'Garmin'? Is there at least one .FIT file in the 'Activities' folder (you did reset the ride you did right?)? If so then if you login to Garmin Connect and choose the option for manual upload and select the ride you want on your device, does that work?More problems but still living....0

Ok I had this exact problem and after weeks of getting angry I managed to solve it. I read somewhere that it would likely be caused by a corrupt file, so once the garmin was connected i removed all the old rides I had done (they had already been uploaded so i didn't need to keep them) - This didn't help so I started removing my saved courses one by one. This immediately solved the problem, and it has been perfect ever since. All the courses were saved on the connect website so i just reloaded them back onto the device and it was fine. I believe this problem was caused by the laptop going flat while the garmin was transfering data so i am now careful to have it connected to the mains while moving data.
Hope this helps,

sounds like it is a corrupt file - garmin can't read one of the nodes of the xml file. To see is this is true, create a course out of your ride and try and import into, for example, bikeroutetoaster - if the file is corrupt it wont load on there either. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.0 -
Hey guys,
Thanks for all the responses.
Garmin working perfectly now. All I had to do was reset the device. I did manage to transfer a few files over the the laptop before the reset so now harm done0
