It is better to have and not need

Than to need and not have.
That is my philosophy in life and I quote it probably 20 times a day to , well anybody.
I started riding my mountain bike , usual clothes, no helmet etc.
I progressed to a road bike, normal clothes etc.
Then the change started to come.
I was told by the wife to wear a helmet. I do now all the time and don't even realise it is there. Now people can debate for all eternity whether they should wear one or not, I will not enter that debate. All I will say is "It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."
I then got sore, so bought some padded shorts. I think these are essential if you do long distances.
I used to wear shorts over the Padded shorts so I didn't look a dick showing of my lunch box. I put my keys in the shorts pockets which got annoying. (Now I don't wear the shorts)
So I had to buy a cycling top with pockets on the back, again "It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."
Although I cycle for fun and fitness, I was transforming into somebody who looked like a Pro(well to the BMX kiddies).
Then I needed somewhere to hold my drinks, for 10 miles, one will do, then realised for longer, I needed 2. SO Added an extra drinks holder and although I don't always have 2 drinks with me(depends on distance and whether) . "It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."
Then I thought about punctures, I am lucky, I have ridden 2500 miles on my 2 bikes and never had a puncture(yep all true) but as I go longer distances, what happens when I get one. yes I know carry a spare inner tube etc, but I havent ever changed one, just watched my mate and I doubt I could do it in less than 60 minutes(Yes I will practice one day)
So I bought a mini pump and some zefal sealant stuff. again "It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."
I also have some spd pedals and with my work to scheme purchase bought some shoes. I havent got the courage yet to put them on, I hate pain and don't want to fall off in front of anybody , let alone fall off at all.
My wife thinks I am looking like a serious cyclist with all the gear. Yes I love cycling. But all I say to her is:
"It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."

The same applies to the number of bikes you own... The rule being n+1, where n is the number you currently own. As you say, it's better to have (a spare) and not needStill trying to convince the missus of the n+1 rule...!0

Don't forget the upper bound of D-1 where D is the number of bikes that will result in divorce.0 -
Yes, i just got a new one and kept my old one, just in case. My eldest uses it now and again. It will also do for my turbo when I buy one.0
