Are Ultremo ZXs the worst tyres available?

Bought two of these, done approx 300 miles and they are falling apart and failing!
The threads are coming out, and one tyre has a failed sidewall where in tube is coming through! This tyre has not been used enough to wear the moulding seam off yet!
For a premium tyre I find this unacceptable, and what is worse is that Schwalbe do not want to know.
Ridiculous tyre from a ridiculous company.
Where should I be looking GP4000s or PR4?

I replaced a pair of Ultremo ZX's to some Michelin Pro 4 Service Course. There great! Highly recommended.“Don’t buy upgrades, ride up grades.”

Had them for the last three years - love them.0

Used them on this year's Etape du Tour Acte 1, and for the required training beforehand. Absolutely great tyre ! I've had no problems with them at all. I did have some issues with two tyres from the previous version of the Ultremo. I contacted Schwalbe customer service who suggested that I send the tyres back to them. They were replaced along with free inner tubes for my inconvenience.
I have used Ultremos for several years with the above being the only issue with them.
Certainly nothing wrong with Schwalbe customer service, i found it first class!0 -
When you try to contact them, they clearly state not to for warranty issues.
I had two faulty tubes from them too, I think I will try the PR40 -
Take em back to where you bought them from. Nought wrong with Ultremo ZXs in general IME. GP4000s are very similar but I find the ride on the ZXs just slightly 'nicer'. Both tyres can cut up more than training tyres but I guess that is always going to be the trade off (nice supple/grippy race tyres does not equate to great durability).0

I use GP4000S and have had absolutely no problems (or punctures) in about 1000 miles. Once over inflated an inner tube with gas which popped the tyre out while riding but no damage done to the tyre at all. Just wish there were more colours!
Having said that - I have friends that ride Ultremos and like themSensa Giulia 1050 -
Never had a problem with mine and ive used 23mm and 25mm both been superb. Not had a single puncture in over 2000miles of riding.
It sounds to me as if you just got unlucky with a set.0 -
i think so, 2 races, 2 punctures, both resulting in ruined tires, they just spilt up. My GF also had a set in Pink and they spilt as well. As the OP, Shallowbe dont want to know.
i dont mind the punctures, it was the damage to the tire/tread and side wall. the PRO 3 isnt much better either, imho these tires are for nice dry roads such as you may find in southern europe.
From a performance pov, a Conti Force/Attack is as good as it gets for a clincher, though wear is nt great at all.
The GP4000s gives the best of both worlds, v. good grip, doesnt cut up much and wears ok0 -

As the worst tyre or the best? Certainly nowhere near the best.0 -
I've found Ultremo ZX's decent tires when they're not worn out. The problem is they wear out far too quick on the roads that i ride. That's only means that my tire choice is wrong though, not that they're bad tires. Just unsuitable for my needs.
It's easy to forget that many of these high end race tires are conceived and designed in and for Europe and European roads. Mediterranean climates, smooth tarmac e.t.c.0 -
By the sounds of it the roads you're riding are pretty poor. The Ultremo's are a very light tyre so durability isn't going to be that great (although plenty of people seem to get away with them I suspect they're riding better roads).
I'd try some GP4000's and if they're not tough enough go to GP 4 Seasons.0 -

+1 to that. The GP4000s is also a great tyre, but nowhere near as supple and rapid feeling as the Ultremos IME. I switched to these recently as I wore through a set of Force and Attack tyres ridiculously quickly (I never thought it would last being a racing tyre, but the rear wore through in no time at all). As Ekimike says though, these racing tyres are never going to last on british b roads, so it's a real balance between fast supple tyres and durability.0 -
no way, i love 'em0

I have now returned these back to Planet X, lets see what they say.
I am tempted by the PR4 with the free tyres offer, seem cheap enough too.0 -
I loved my Ultremo ZXs but as a number of previous posters have said, they're not the most durable. Side walls are particularly thin compared to other tyres that I've used before and unfortunately a stone took out the side wall of my front tyre while I was doing >25mph along a dual carriageway! Not an experience that I want to repeat!!
If you're going to be racing or cycling on good roads then I'd highly recommend. Otherwise, get something that's going to be more hardwearing and less likely to get damaged.0 -
Had some Ultremos that went badly out of shape - couldn't get a reply from their customer service - pretty poor, still at least they were a cheap mistake as got them in a sale.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0
