Deore XT rear brake playing up...

Hi,

Been running a Deore XT brakeset for about 18 months now. Recently the rear brake squeals and groans when I break and has very little power, to the point where it really doesn't help my stop under braking anymore, it just squeals. I have cleaned the rotor (which is quite old) and changed the pads (new set, different compound) which did help for about a week, but since then it has returned to its screamy ways. I thought it may be caliper alignment at first but I haven't adjusted it in the 18 months its been fitted. Any suggestions as to whats up with it?

sounds like glazed or contaminated.

what do you use to clean it?

White spirit to clean the rotor, and I sanded the old pads before replacing them completely when the problem didn't stop (and cleaned the rotor again).

I had xt brakes on my 456 and had exactly the same problem i tried everything to fix it but to no avail, I had the pads heated up to decontaminate them, i had the the pads replaced twice, bled the brakes, sanded the pads and rotor, changed the rotor, aligned the calipers but nothing worked! I got rid of them in the end and got some avid elixir r and have never looked back.

There's your problem.
Clean it with Isopropyl alchohol, nothing else.
And replace pads.

+1, white spirit leaves a residue, IPA doesn't.
