Hello all!!

First time post, so not sure if this has been covered many times or not, did a quick search and nothing came up!

Have been an on off mountain biker for years and recently got into road cycling so enjoy the best of both worlds, i've come to the point where i'd like to purchase a Garmin 800 to train with and use to plot routes etc

My question is as tech moves on pretty rapidly is it worth purchasing the 800 now or waiting a few months into the new year incase there's a newer model due out? The 800 looks perfect and i'd be happy with it but you know what it's like buying something then a few months later the next gen comes out, so not sure how long the 800 has been out and if anyone knows if there's a new Garmin in the pipeline??

As i get more into the road cycling hope to post more topics on here as previously found and Aprilia forum very helpful, although i was getting fitter using the Falco through the year!!

Thanks in advance for any comments/advice

  • The Garmin 800 is still a relatively new GPS system, i'm looking at buying one in the near future once i get a road bike sorted.
Potentially buying it without the maps to save some money would be a good idea as there are plenty on the internet that you can download onto the device.

Oh and welcome to the forum! :)

The 800 was released around Nov 2010 so hardly a relatively new bit of kit. Chances are a replacement will be released in the next year or two seeing as the 705 the 800 replaced was released in 2008. The link below already discusses the 900.

I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • Thanks for that, there's still some offers especially from Evans cycles which makes me think the next gen is around the corner after Xmas, will prob hang fire as i'm in no hurry
  • There's some decent deals to be had on the 800 depending on what you want. For full maps and cadence/HR, the Evans price is currently very good, I bought mine off Amazon for £345 which was a really good deal at the time and that was only last month. I can't see that the prices will come down too much from that if a 900 is released, seeing as the RRP is still well over £400, and bear in mind you'll be paying a lot more for a 900 anyway.

They have it at a good price.

I've read a few reviews on Amazon mentioning water ingress issues on the 800. This has put me off a bit. Used 705s are fetching crazy money on eBay, so a difficult decision as the 900 will be over £400 ?:(

They also have a good price for the unit only if you are not interested in cadence and heart rate....

Presumably the city maps software can be bought elsewhere - does anyone know of good alternative software that is compatible with Garmin?
