If anyone's looking for a great deal on a jacket for this winter, Wiggle have the Phantom available for £71 at the moment. Fantastic jacket, warm, wind proof, shower proof, hard wearing (mine's withstood a couple of crashes completely unscathed !) and that price is the best price I've seen it for a few years !

Gonna have to blame Wiggle for this one !

Just ordered :D , an extra 10% off as well with ' extra-10 ' so even better....

Let hope it fits nicely, as it's the first Gore thing I've bought.
  • Thanks, I've ordered one.

Also hoping their size chart is accurate!

The Oxygen SO, is very similar but more roadie cut, and no zip off arms, just in case you were wondering. I had the old Phantom (N2S version) which was ace and looked to buy the new version but found they'd changed the shape - the belly is baggier - maybe trying to mirror the current MTB scene, with well-fed forty-somethings! Anyway, the Oxygen is a better roadie cut, unless you have a beer belly.

Ditto this. Very much a MTB style.

Hmmm, I was about to order but I'm a skinny get and come up towards the larger end of size small according to the sizing table. From what folk are saying, the Phantom might be a bit bulky on me......

  • Cheers Matt saw this and am thinking that's gonna be my birthday pressie!
Are all sizes and colours available though? Last I saw there were no high vis yellow ones, and not all the common sizes?
    Is it relatively waterproof/resistant?
    Cheers,

Would agree, it's not a snug roadie cut, but it's a good fit never the less. I'm 6'2" and 85kg and wear a large. The body is a slim enough fit in the large, and the sleeves are plenty long enough for my gangly arms. The only concession to a MTB cut is th at the tail isn't quite as long as a dedicated roadie version, but I've never had a an issue with that. In fact, my MTB jacket is even shorter at the back.

    Cheers,

I've used mine in some pretty heavy rain nd it's been brilliant ! It's not a dedicated waterproof, but it's pretty damn good ! I also wash mine with some proofer, TX Direct I think it's called, and the water just beads up on the surface.

Well at least I can send it back via collect+ at no cost, so we'll just see.. :)

And it's been dispatched already :D
  • I am 70kg , 5'10" , and wear a small Phantom Jacket , nice slim fit with just a merino base layer for winter .

As mentioned, as long as you get the sizing right, it's a slim enough fit, but not a tight fit. I originally had an XL, which was like a sail, but the L doesn't flap about at all. It has sufficiently long arms that you can go for a body size which gives you a tighter fit.

Well, I went to Evans to see what they had but only medium and up

The Phantom was clearly too large - the Oxygen was better but I think the small would probably be better. Depends then on length.

Anyone know how much smaller a small actually is? Both in length and volume.

I'm 5'8" and 66kg, about a 36inch chest, and small is a good fit. Not tight, but not baggy.

I will say that it is warm and I only use it in winter. I think the biggest improvement they could make is adjustable cuffs so that you can get some more ventilation. The cuffs are elasticated. Also, if you're commuting, definitely don't wear a rucksack because you cover the vents on the back and will get hot.

Last thing, careful if you carry your bike on your shoulder. The zips for the arms can scratch your seat tube if you're not careful. Other than a few minor niggles, great jacket for winter and good price.

Thanks for that. I've taken a punt on it so we'll see.

I ordered one of these after seeing this thread. I ordered a medium since the sizing guide seemed to suggest that'd be the right size, then a few hours later changed my mind after seeing some of the posts on here, but Wiggle had already processed the order so I had to order another one in small. Both arrived today and I've just tried the small on and it's massive. I'm 5'8" and about 67kg with a 36" chest and it IS baggy. Sleeve length is good, but it's so loose around the arms (and body as well). If you're used to loose fitting clothing then it may be okay, but if you like your cycling clothes to be remotely fitted then I'd give this a miss. I'm sending them both back.

Ha ha - 18 months ago when I was just shy of 18 stone, I really wanted to buy one but even the XXL was about 3 sizes too small for me! Was a really good moment when I had shed a couple of stone and was able to fit into one, so I bought one to celebrate, but now at 14 stone thats too big really, although wearable!

Thing is, I find it too hot to wear much - otherwise I would jump at the chance to buy a smaller size from Wiggle now.

Tried the Oxygen in in a Medium in Evans at the weekend. Found that it wouldn't zip up around my shoulders but was baggy around the middle.

Does anyone make anything even more fitted?

    Thanks Op,

I got the pool blue in large at the end of last week and used the voucher in this thread, really chuffed.

I'm 14.5 stone and 6' 1. It's a great fit. It's probably on the limit and if I was any heavier I'd probably go up a size, but still losing weight so my roadie cut will probably relax after a few weeks. :)
  • ..got one a few weeks back when they were first discounted (Evans price match)...I'm about 5ft 8 and 67k and small is fine for me, though certainly not "tight".
Got caught in a heavy shower last week and was impressed with the water resisitance- my torso was dry, though the arms got wet inside, probably due to seepage through the zips.
I particularly wanted zip off arms, and have found it a bonus on those early morning rides that get warmer as the sun comes up above the trees..
...at the moment its my favourite piece of kit and looks darn smart when I have my recovery drink in the pub...!

on the topic of bargains, montane featherlits are £35 on CRC at the mo. Should be perfect for the back pocket.

    Just got mine :D

5'6" and 38" chest, ordered a medium and it's a perfect fit. I'm so excited!

Looks to be a very well thought out bit of kit; love the fact that the zip-off sleeves use two zips so you can partially unzip them to give some pit ventilation.

Think I'll be going out in it on Sunday to see just how wet I get :D
