Just got a new Sora mech in the post. After 2 years of service and various falls it's time to retire the old one, it's knackered.

Problem is the new SS model has a slightly longer cage and a tooth capacity of 37 compared to the old of 31.

Question is, will I need to extend/replace the chain?

Thank you!

Try it and see, I'd say probably not.

How old is the chain? If its 2 years old it probably needs replacing anyway.

and if you replace the chain you may need to replace block (depending on how worn your chain is) as otherwise new chain may jump on old block (you can always try it and see ....)

Chain is pretty much brand new annoyingly. I think the suck it and see approach is probably the best bet.

EDIT Cassette and chainrings have just been done.

Yes that would be my approach ... that can be the problem with cycling as a hobby, you replace one item which then has a knock on effect on other things ..... of course its not going to cost as much as moving from say a 8 speed STI block to 10 speed :-)

New mech was £13.50 so I can't grumble too much.

If I need to extend the chain, logically I can't see any problem using a connector and adding a few links on. Anyone object to this practice?

Fitted last night, seems alright. The mech looks a bit stretched when cross chaining on the big rings. Should be fine.

mech cage length has nothing to do with chain length.
