Hi all i wanted to give my Campag 11 speed chain a good clean.

one of the techs in work told me of a method he used to use on chains,

he sat them in a bath of oil and gently heated it to warm to thin the oil then he adjitated the chain and moved it about

to get the oil into all the moving parts,, then left hanging to drip away the excess..

he reckons a quick wipe after a few hours and another wipe after the initial ride and it will be like silk, and be fully lubed..

is this worth all the effort and as good as he suggests or is there a better way???

cheers guys

  • You don’t want to do that, the oil is too thin and not clingy enough, once you spinning it flies off every where covering your rear wheel and tyre, try it if you don’t believe me.

    err

you used to get wax that you applied like that (in the 1970's.....)

and for the price of a chain its not worth the hassle

chain bath (although they tend to be crap and break) and finish line red / green (what ever you fancy)

    change chain regularly

breaking a chain on a bike ? it goes in the bin...........
  • guess the tech in work is a little old school

    LOL cheers guys

If you want to put the effort in then basically that's almost perfect.

For perfection conduct the whole operation in a sealed chamber and pull a vacuum first!
