Go roof, it's much more secure and safer unless you're going under low bridges. Thule racks with fork clamps.

I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • If you do go for the roof option, take a look at the elite San remo. I've had both and the san remo is much cheaper than the Thule and just as secure
  • iv found 2 on halfords and just wanted to know what the difference is cheers for your help

Don't know about those, but measure them against what the Thule ones offer. A Thule system has a key lock to the front fork holder meaning thief has to either drill the lock or break the forks to get your bike. Being able to remove the front wheel and lock the forks in stops an opportunist thief taking your bike off the roof and pedalling away on it. A system that secures both wheels requires something to secure the bike around the downtube potentially marking it and if the bike is carbon fibre, applying pressure where you don't want it. Keeping both wheels on raises the overall height slightly.

Thule may not be the cheapest, (not much more than those you're looking at) but like most things, you get what you pay for and if you end up changing vehicles as I have, they supply fittings for most vehicle manufacturers so you don't have to buy new racks.

I've got a Saris Bones 3, and it's great. It holds the bikes securely and spaced from each other, is bomb proof and will fit 99% of cars. It's also available in a single or double version.

The Saris Bones 3 is not compatible with the Ford Focus from the 2005 to 2010 shape.
