700 x 18-23 or 700 x 20-28 inner-tube?

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I have always bought the bigger tubes for my 700 x 23 tires. But recently the guy at the LBS handed me the smaller one. I read somewhere that you should always go for the smaller tubes, is this true? I've not had many problems using the larger ones and am thinking that smaller tube means thinner tube wall when inflated? I'm probably thinking about it too much, but out of interest - what do you guys go with?

I've never noticed any problems either way - I guess there is a small weight saving in going for the 18-23s, but I bet you can't feel the difference. Either will (and do) fit - I think I normally stick to 18-23s out of habit FWIW.

yep go smaller, unless you need them to be thicker/tougher for a reason.

  • Why?

  • It makes them easier to fit as there is less tube to get into the tyre, resulting in less pinches
