New chain - now it's slipping
My chain broke in Manchester just now so I nipped to Evans to get a new chain fitted. I know nothing about chains so just got the one that the guy recommended (Shimano HG74 10 speed).
I should have gone straight back - but I was in a rush as I had to get back - but the chain was slipping pretty regularly. Just throwing my pedals two or three inches forward at random intervals.
Will it 'settle' down or do I need to take it back?
Thanks.

This is because your cassette is worn out. Chains and cassettes wear out together and need to be replaced together unless the chain is replaced frequently.
I doubt it will settle down, although I'm not sure.0 -
+1. Almost certainly this. To test, try putting it in a gear you don't normally use, so it won't be worn, and see if it still slips. It doesn't get any easier, but I don't appear to be getting any faster.0

Thanks - bike was bought in 2008 and used in all weathers and only gets the most cursory of washes and tune-ups so I guess it's no surprise it's the cassette as well.
Oh well - cheaper than commuting in a car. Need to keep telling myself that.0 -
Could also be the front chainrings, though i'd agree with the other that the cassette would the main culprit. Have a look at the teeth on the chainset, if they look sharkfin like then it could be an expensive repair.0

Agree with the others as worn casstte is most likley culprit but just in case check it has been fitted at the correct length as well.0

Well, it was the cassette. Also needed a new derailleur. You wonder why they didn't pick up on that yesterday when they fitted the chain, but there you go.
Off I go and I remember why I loved cycling. It was all running smoothly, there was no wind and I wasn't in a rush. Perfect. I felt like I had a new bike.
But then I go and drop the bike outside a shop. And a spoke snaps. That's never happened before. I wonder whether my bike's now getting to an age where everything will start to break and snap and bend. Maybe I'm throwing good money after bad. So, within minutes I went from having a 'new' bike to one with a snapped spoke, an un-true wobbly bike wheel and back brakes that didn't work. Because of where I was I had to ride home so probably made the wheel worse.
Not after advice - just venting my fury!0
