Campag Ergo brakelever broken?

I was out riding last night and slowly coming to a stop at a junction and applied some light pressure to the left brake lever on my Veloce Ergo's. I had a tiny ping and the brake lever went all 'floppy'. I had a look as I thought maybe the cable had pulled out or snapped.

Cable is fine but its like the tension has gone. I can pull the brake lever in, but it has to go all the way to the bar now to put the brakes on. The lever also moves on the pivot, a little side to side and backwards and forwards.

Has a spring popped inside and can I repair it? Or is it something terminal?

If the lever is still attached correctly to the lever and caliper at each end, yet is going all the way back to the bar when pulled, then it can be one of three things:

1: the inner cable has pulled through the clamp on the caliper

2: the outer cable has pulled through a cable stop

3: the lever pivot has failed.

Any of these would result in loss of tension of the cable. First check cable tension and adjust as required. If it still does it then it's either #2 or #3 above. I've never heard of a lever pivot failing, and a failed cable stop is unlikely, in my experience. I'm guessing the cable has pulled through the clamp.
  • Could be the nipple on the end of the cable at the lever end. I replaced a cable for a friend because it had freyed so badly the nipple was hanging on with just a couple strands of cable.
