Usually wear tights with bibs underneath all through the winter from autumn. Have found them quite warm in the past above about 0-5c.

Wondering how many of you wear a thermal bib short, such as Assos T607, with roubaix fleece style legwarmers?

Worth trying and keeping the tights for the coldest days?
Thoughts?

  • i mainly ride mountain bike but in the winter even on the coldest wettest days i wear road bib & brace shorts under my baggies with roubaix leg warmers and find them warm enought for me.road shorts are better as they seem to be closer fitting than mountain bike liner shorts (keeps the chilly draft out).

the best way to keep warm is keep your core warm the rest looks after itself i use marinio wool base layer under a thin fleece under a waterproof/windproof jacket
falling off doesn't hurt....its the landing that hurts

  • I've got a couple of pairs of these, all I need to get me through the winter and cheap as well.

Those Assos are stupidly priced. I use the roubaix bibs a lot and the Santini Sirio is good but high cut which is wierd but fantastic on a cold windy day. I've also got dhb and Hincapie and Northwave the latter being a bit low on quality control. For the money the dhb or Santini are good

OK for up to a couple of hours, or fast, intense interval sessions but not the 5 hour epics in the snow we've been having these past few winters. I actually prefer roubaix 3/4 bibs with decent overshoes as I find 2 layers of fabric over the quads can feel more restrictive. I also prefer a decent tight with a pad rather than wearing shorts under a tight - lycra has rubbish thermal and wicking properties and can feel damp and clammy after a bit
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

+1 for the Roubaix bibs and knee warmers, although I went for the dhb ones from wiggle, not the stupid money Assos kind! Then had to buy the 3/4 bibs as Wiggle were doing them for 28 quid a week or so - a steal and decent quality too. That's most of my autumn/winter/spring kit sorted now....very versatile in a range of temperatures. I find the DhBs generously sized by the way, I'm 5'8 with 33" waist and the small works for me :)

Get the Assos T607 Bibs and a pair of Assos Leg Warmers, yes they are expensive but they are the best.

Come off on ice and its an expensive day out.
I just go with normal lycra shorts and unpadded longs over the top.

I'd only wear legwarmers if I thought it may warm up later and I'd take them off. Thats unlikely and unwise in winter ?
  • Just invested in T607's and S7 legwarmers after spending a few winters in dhb roubaix bib tights. The latter were good but the pad wasn't a patch on Assos', neither was the build and material, plus having short legs meant I needed to turn the ankle up by two inches! I've now bought a fantatsic pair of multi season bibs that can be adapted with knee warmers and the very well designed S7 leg warmers which have an extra section that goes right up each thigh for max warmth. If I'm unfortunate enough to come off on the ice and damage them I can mail them to Assos and have them fixed for free.
