Play with Campag UT cranks
I did a half distance Triathlon over the weekend and the bike came out of it a little for worse.
Since then I have around 10mm of play in the non-driveside crank arm in a vertical plane. By that I mean it does not flex much outwards or towards the stay, but there's a stupid amount of play in a up and down motion.
The central bolt holding the two crank arms/axle together is tight and certainly not loose. I have not taken the crank arms off yet and had a look yet as I haven't had the chance. But I am fearing the worst.
Can anyone either re-assure me or confirm my fears as to what this could be?
The Chainset is a Campagnolo athena 11 speed Ultra torque compact. I have only used this since April this year.

10 mm? Are you sure? That's 1 cm, you can't have that much play.
Normally play is due to the bearings being shot, but if you have that much play, then it might be something worse.
Do you have a Campagnolo dealing shop around you?left the forum March 20230 -

Yes really 10mm or there about, certainly no less that 5/6mm. It's a lot of play.
I though bearings but then why is there no sidewards play? I can physically push the non-driveside crankarm around for about 1cm before the driveside even starts to move.
EDIT: There is no play in any plane on the driveside."War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength." George Orwell - 19840 -

ahhh, ok..the two sides have poor contact or the engaging edges are sheared off... in other words, you need to undo the bolt, tap the cranks against each other and retighten... failing that it's option two, so a new chainsetleft the forum March 20230 -
thanks, I shall remove the non-drive side crank take a look and then hope its an easy fix. At least it happened at the end of season"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength." George Orwell - 19840

Also make sure the spring lip on the Drive side cup is present. Hopefully the hirst oint is fine. It's made of very hard steel so it would take alot of abuse to break the teeth on that.
Where is Aisle 12? There has to be someone campag freindly near you. If it an older veloce/centaure UT chainset then these are still available other wise a replacement will be the newer power torque system.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
Right I've sort of sorted the problem.
The bolt that holds the two halves together keeps coming loose. So for the minute re-tightening and threadlock is holding, but I've only done about 50miles since.
The spring washer is definitely there.
The crankset is an Athena carbon 11speed.
I might just be convinced to replace them with PT cranks as I need to do some work before next season, but if I don't need to I can put the money elsewhere."War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength." George Orwell - 19840 -
You tightened it using a torque wrench?0

It shouldn't come loose if you tighten it properly... if it keeps happening, get a new bolt, it won't be massively expensive. Don't go the PT route, it's garbage and requires expensive tools to take it offleft the forum March 20230 -
PT is not garbage, it does require special tools to remove but ultimatley it has two bearings just like U.T and they last as long as each other.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Perhaps by 'garbage' he meant less convenient / more expensive for the home mechanic.
I'm happy with my Shimano external BB arrangement because of it's simplicity and the fact the tools are basic / cheap.0 -

That's exactly what I meant. I have fitted one in 2010... once on, I realised I had put the rubber washer inside out, not a big deal, but annoying... at the time there was no tool available to take it down... is this Campagnolo renouned quality?
To be honest, Veloce 9 speed was a fantastic groupset for the money and Record and Chorus 10 speed were brilliant... anything that came out afterwards is just junk for the money it costs, by Campagnolo standards of course.left the forum March 20230 -
It not a problem with the crankset it a problem in tool avialbality. Now the tools are out (cyclus make the best ones) it all fine again. As I have all the PT tools in the shop I see no need to spend more to get UT. For me Chorus/Record and Super record in 10 or 11 speed guise is out of my financial league.
However it is not home mechanic friendly which will limit it's appeal.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0
