decided to take advantage of a special offer and ordered a set of Mavic ksyrium SL's today with a pair of continental 4000s tyres and tubes

£608 all in, 20% off the wheels and BOGOF on the tyres. i couldnt get close to that deal anywhere locally or online.

i had my mind set on the ksyrium elite for £380 with BOGOF tyres but decided the SL were worth the extra £. they look awesome and are a bit lighter and stiffer so i think i would have regretted it in the long run

hopefully get them back end of next week.

i will keep my DT Swiss R1850 for bad weather/winter runs and for indoor training.

im going to buy a new cassette to save having to swap them round - will i gain from upgrading from 105 to ultegra cassette?

Only difference between those cassettes is the Ultegra lockring is 3 grams lighter. Save your money.

nice one thanks for the info! will stick with the 105 cassette.

    cheers

just been looking into tyre weights and my current continental ultra race are 310g (non folding) and the GP4000S i got are 230g so thats a good saving too!
  • Considering a pair myself - be interested to hear how you get on with them once you've used them in anger.

All the gear, but no idea...
  • From Velo Ecosse ? Well done.

Get the same cassette - saves hassle.

I'm loving my Elites, but ready to stick the DTs on for the crappy weather !

  • Thanks Hector - I'm torn between the Ksyrium Elite S and the SLS from Mavic as well as considering some hand builts. The conundrum is that I really want to give my LBS the business as they've been very good to me in the past (they stock Mavic), but I understand hand built wheels may well give me more bang for my buck. I'm also slightly put off by the 2013 Mavic wheels all coming with their tyres and tubes. I'd prefer to choose my own rubber...Hmmm....

I've got the same wheels and you won't be disappointed with them, mine are still bob-on after thousands of miles.

Why would you put a 105 cassette on a set of SLs, you pay that much for a set of wheels to save weight etc and then you put 40+ grams straight back on to save 15 quid on a cassette, doesn't really make sense does it. You might as well buy the Elites and save £250.
  • Cheers - the 2013 version look very smart indeed. Will pop into the LBS and take a closer look at the 2013 edition.

a 105 and ultegra cassette weigh almost the same. you need to go to dura ace to get a significant weight saving.

i had bought them form velo ecosse but they had problems getting stock so had to cancel the order or wait 3 weeks.

my LBS matched the deal, fitted the tyres and my cassette so worked out better in the end. plus i got them without having to wait which is good as im entered in a hard ride this weekend with lots of climbing.

tried the wheels out last night and they're a real step up. they 4000S tyres feel excellent and the wheels are so stiff and light when climbing its great. when your out the saddle you really notice the difference.

If folk are bothered about such a saving, there's roughly 40 grams between 105 and Ultegra and the same between Dura-ace and Ultegra, the difference is in the price, £15 for 40grms and then £120 for the 40grm loss with Dura-ace.

there isn't 40g between 105 and ultegra. there is about 2 or 3g difference.

dura ace saves about 80g over ultegra but is 3x the price.

I feel like an arse quoting figures but I was inquisitive when I was buying a cassette a few months ago, the weights are roughly.... 105 - 245grms, ult- 208grms, DA - 160grms.

Were they all the same size cassettes?

245g is for 12-27 size which are heavier compared to 11-25 for example.

40 grms is neither here nor there but there's a guy who's weighed the 5700 groupset piece by piece on a website, google Shimano 105 cassette weight and he's about 5 or 6 down. It's a 12/25.
If you think about it, Shimano aren't going to sell the two groupset cassettes that close together, nobody would buy the Ultegra.

Or lay off the take away;s for a couple of weeks. That should save about the same weight!!
