2009 Specialized TriCross Comp or New Entry-level Road?

Hi everyone,
I'm beginning a new job soon and want to ride to work if possible. The commute will be approximately 14 miles each way (approx. 80% road and/or bike trail; 20% city streets and/or gravel paths) and I plan to do this 2-4 times a week. For a ride like this, what would be the best bike for me?
My inclination is to go with a new, entry-level road bike. I'm strongly considering the Specialized Allez Sport Comp (http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/ ... pact#specs). However, I've also stumbled across a used 2009 Specialized TriCross Comp that fits me perfectly and is in good condition. It is being sold for $575. I am tempted by the TriCross because 1) it's cheaper and it's hard for me to know how dedicated I'll be to this commute after awhile so I'm hesitant about committing a lot of money to a new bike, 2) the components seem much nicer than those on the Allez, and 3) having the ability to deal with bad weather, crappy roads, and some occasional dirt/gravel etc. seems like a plus.
What do you guys think? If you were me, what do you think would be the best way to go?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I got a secondhand Tricross for my 20 mile commute some of which is on trails or off road paths. Can't fault it - fast and reliable and bombproof. Good luck!0

Thanks, that's reassuring. Do you think $575 is a good deal for a 2009?0

According to Bikepedia it's a $2250 bike new so yes unless it is trashed and needs a lot of work. I would say you are getting fair deal.0
