hi all
recently changed my bike to a Campagnolo geared one
and the rear wheel makes a much louder noise than im used to..

when freewheeling the rear cassette makes a very loud clicking noise.

a bit like i have heard on hope hubs on a MTB

am i right in saying this is the cassette,, or is it the hub??

also can i buy a quieter one next time ? or are all Campags noisy like this??

i worknight shift you see and can see me becoming unpopular coming up my drive before i get off lol

cheers

The noise is part of the fun of a Campag freehub!

^^ It's the freehub, not the Cassette...

I have two sets of Campag wheels... One is loud, the other is uber-loud.

Miche hubs and novatec hubs with camapg freehubs are cheaper. That would mean new wheels and customs ones at that.

If you strip the free-hub and put a squirt of heavier wet chain lube in there that will quiet it right down if needed. Common on C King, Superlight, Novatec, Krisilium Elites ect... Campagnolo should be super silent... Mine is 8)

campagnolo shouldn't be super silent at all - it should rattle like an angry rattlesnake!

you can add grease to the hub to quieten down (a little) if you really must - my campag eurus wheels are very loud - always have been!

As you hinted before though, it does spoil the moments of drafting behind a friend freewheeling... They're always gonna know when you aren't doing any work!

Cheaper Campagnolo wheels = loud, more expensive Campagnolo wheels = quiet.

I have loud Vento Reaction and Khamsin wheelsets and a quite Neutron wheelset.

Was saying that Campag GEARING should be silent. Im assuming that he does not have campag wheels/hubs, as they are loud, as are fulcrum (campag in drag...) ect... The thick oil trick still stands though!

My 2012 Zeros are louder than my 2012 Racing 3's.

Maybe Campag put the cheap hubs in the Fulcrums

Seriously though, I've heard others say that their more expensive Campag hubs are quiet as well so maybe it's just something they do on certain wheelsets.

I have Eurus that are very quiet and Bora 1s that are very loud. Both have the same Record hubs. The Bora 1s do get on my nerves after a while, especially as they also make a noise when braking.

The noise is from the pawls as they click against the ratchet inside the hub. I've found that even a thick oil like Phil Tenacious will leak out of the hub and make a mess. On the other hand, if you use a grease, it has to be a very light grease in order to allow the pawl springs to snap the pawl back into the ratchet when you want to pedal again. If the pawls are gummed up by grease they cannot engage the ratchet and you risk breaking one (or more- there are 3). Also, this treatment doesn't last so needs to be done a couple times a year. I gave up, like most of the posters above and now the noise doesn't bother me.

High end Campag hubs with adjustable bearings (Record, Neutron etc) are easy to service. I use ordinary Finish Line grease on the bearings and smear a bit of grease on the hub ratchet and the seats of the pawls, making sure I don't use too much and stop the pawls springing back up. This makes freewheeling virtually silent. I do this once a year.
