7900 vs 6700 vs 5700

Guys,

Always liked SRAM, however, of late am becoming less enamoured due to clunky shifts and find the 5700 on my caad to be much easier and nicer to shift.

As always am looking for the br collective experience as to whether there Is much difference in performance between 7900 or 6700 as compared to 5700???

I ask because I'm looking to swap out my force/red mix for either 6700 or 7900, was also thinking of ultegra di2 at a long shot!! But didn't want to fork outfor dura ace if there is no appreciable difference vs 5700 or 6700

Cheers :D

5700 is quite good and most people will be happy with it, 6700 is what you should buy if you ride a lot as it's incredibly satisfying and works incredibly well, and 7900 and Di2 are great if you have the means or are sponsored but are also completely unnecessary. The weight savings of 7900 over 6700 are negligible and 6700 is more robust so you'll spend less over time replacing parts. With the money you save you could buy some really nice wheels.

I can only comment on 105 vs DA but the difference isn't much. Front shifting on the DA is more positive which may be due to the FSA cranks on the 105 bike. The fact is that the best bike gets the top end stuff and I wanted the DA so I got it (plus the group set as a whole was on offer at the time).

I think of it like an iPad purchase decision - if you think of the practical, logical reasons to buy DA or an iPad it is not justifiable, but sometimes it is just nice to have nice stuff and so long as it is not taking food out your kids mouths then there is nothing wrong with that.

    Thanks guys,

I had heard from reviews that 6700'was probably the best in terms of function and da was more 'blingy'
Brommers, thanks, I love ur analogy and I think it's very true!! Had thought the fsa were not brilliant but r perfectly functional, any difference in feel of shifting between the two groups?

Any thoughts on di2 (ultegra) vs 6700 and 7900??

I prefer 6700 shift action over 7900 which feels a bit too light a vague. Again, di2 is fantastic but I just think there are better things to do with the money.

I actually prefer 5700 shift however that being said I do love my 7900 chainset, a bit lighter and stiffer and bought in the sale for less then the price of 6700. I now run DA chainset and 6700 the rest which I think gives a pretty good weight/cost ratio.

I've got da 7900 purchased last year and 105 5700 purchased a month ago. I too prefer the shifting of 5700 but this may be due to newer cables. In all honesty there isnt a real difference in performance, the main difference is the weight and the bling factor. I also had ultegra last year and that felt almost the same as my 105

cheers guys, think I may go with the either the 6700 or 5700 and perhaps a bling DA chainset :)

    I'd go for a Rotor 3D chainset with Q-rings instead... ;)

  • I went from Ultegra SL 6600 to DA 7900 and could barely tell the difference only the brakes were noticeably better.

I've now got Ultegra Di2 and would chose that over mechanical Dura Ace any day. I go as far as saying I'd never go back to cable shifts, its that good.

I have heard that the front shifting is difficult to say the least and that the q rings really do not feel any different from round and that the best difference was from the o-symmetrics??

I do stand to be corrected mind you! :D

Jamie tell me more, now you've got my attention - did u set it up yourself?? is the weight difference noticeable?, battery life ok??

No came on a Canyon Aeroad setup straight out the box.

I've not noticed the extra weight but without trying an identical bike with mechanical Ultegra I've got nothing to compare with and I'd much prefer the perfect shifts every time at what feels like the click of a mouse and the auto trimming front mech than a couple of hundred grams of extra weight.

Battery life's not an issue. I've now done 350 miles (according to strava) and charged it once which took about 10mins.
I'd be more than confident of doing a week trip to alps etc. and not needing to charge it.
