Fractured chainstay on carbon frame

Hey guys,
Was riding my BeOne Raw pro this week, about 15 miles west of Fort William and as I approached a wee hill from a flat, I accelerated a bit and suddenly felt the rear wheel jam and I was buckled off into the verge. On inspecting the bike, it became apparent that the wheel had twisted due to a nasty looking vertical fracture in the chainstay. It's far away from any fixing or clamp points and has never been crashed so it was pretty unexpected. The split is in exactly the same place as you could see a line in the raw carbon finish which I was told was a normal joining point inherant in raw carbon frames.
Just wondering what any of you think may have been the cause? I'd like to think I can put enough power into the drivetrain with my legs to break a frame but unfortunately for me I'm not really that strong.

Anyway, I've sent details and pictures to CRC so hopefully it will be honoured by BeOne under warranty - I've certainly enjoyed the bike so far and never had any issues with crc so will keep you updated on what happens.

Jeez, me no likee !
Is that the 'joining point' you refer to, slightly to the right ?
If you've not crashed it, not dropped the chain or something which has taken a chip out of it, sounds like a manufacturing issue - and not one I'd be very impressed with : you could have been descending at speed, or pitched-off into the road into the path of a following car...0 -
Not good at all, and kinda lucky it didn't fail on a fast descent.
From the photo it does look to be near a joining point, so could well be a manufacturing fault. Hopefully you'll get it replaced under warranty.
I'd be interested to know what BeOne say about it - having just purchased a carbon framed Beone Diablo Race a couple of weeks ago.
btw. well done on completing the charity ride.0 -
Ouch!
Good luck and do let us know what happens0 -
I'm sure I've seen someone post this on here recently - it shows how a carbon bike frame is constructed and it does look like you're frame failure is in the general area of a join ...

That is one of the most drastic crack's I've ever seen. The smaller cracks are quite alarming surrounding the actual snap, does suggest a large construction error. Impressive legs, or unlucky frame
.
As said, interested to see how the warranty is dealt with.0 -
these guys be able to help , they x rayed and fixed and sprayed the damaged area on my Scott addict R1 , complete snap on seat stay £170 in delivery , 4000 miles later , not scared of 50 MPH descents at all .

I sent away photos and a warranty claim email on thursday - I'll let you all know what the response is... Hopefully it'll be positive!0

Hey guys, just an update! The frame is now with Chain Reaction, who emailed to let me know they have sent photos of the frame to BeOne and they will let me know when they have a response from them.
Fingers crossed it doesn't take too long!0 -

Good luck with that! I've decided that if I have enough money in the future, I'm going titanium. I wouldn't trust carbon...

I'm thinking the same thing Declan! I know it is irrational to write off carbon frames on the whole but when there is that niggle in the back of your mind, it's always going to affect your riding, which I don't want.0

There are many, many reports of cracked titanium frames... Just sayin'!
I'd go for Reynolds 953 myself.- - - - - - - - - -

I've just googled it - can't people make quality frames anymore?!? My Peugeot (that I found in a skip) is steel and it's still going strong!!! Maybe this Reynolds 953 is decent quality...

Im gonna keep updating this as a record of communications should I end up with a sour taste in my mouth!
Had an email from CRC today saying that BeOne have requested the frame now be shipped to them so they can 'inspect' it further. So... from Scotland to Ireland to Holland it has now travelled.0 -
wouldn't put me off buying carbon, as already stated there are plenty of broken ti reports. It can happen regardless of frame material. Hope you get a result over this OP ....0
-
7 days later - still no update from CRC or BeOne on whats going on with my frame... getting pretty tetchy being off the bike for so many weeks! Argh!!!0
-
Still no word from BeOne this week... Next week let's hope!0

I'm in a similar position. I'm waiting nervously to hear from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. According to my calculations I could be due another £1k tax rebate0

That could coincide perfectly with my need for a new £1k frame?!?!?
What luck! And thanks for being so generous!0 -
Unfortunately I've already spent some of it and a large box arrived at work from Wiggle yesterday. hence the nervously waiting...
Still hoping you get a decent response tho.0 -

This is part of the reason why I DID go for a Reynolds 953 frame, hope to pick it up in a few weeks as it should be entering the workshop very soon now. Its almost as light as the best carbon frames, and much more resilient. Hardness wise its like armour plating, even though the tubes are only 0.3mm thickWyndyMilla Massive Attack | Rourke 953 | Condor Italia 531 Pro | Boardman CX Pro | DT Swiss RR440 Tubeless Wheels

Ladies and gentlemen,
I am pleased to announce that I received a message today saying BeOne are willing to honour the warranty and have offered a replacement frame! I like a happy ending. Well done, BeOne!
Now I just need to decide if I want to keep it or not...0 -
Thanks for the update.
As I too have a BeOne carbon framed bike, it's good to hear that they offered you a replacement. What were Chain Reaction like to deal with in all of this, did they keep you in the loop ?0 -

Yay! Now wait for the new frame to arrive and sell it in brand-new condition and get a steel frame!

Dee4life... I wonder if we have any friends in common as I ride in Dundee also! Do you ever ride in the Carse or to the north of Dundee (Carrot Hill etc)?
Chain Reaction were fine, they emailed me ASAP when BeOne told them anything and gave me one update to say they hadn't heard anything yet after 2 weeks was up.
Declan - that is something that has crossed my mind... Need to sleep on it I think0 -
Nweststeyn ... we do indeed. I work with Mr Brough, i think you know him
I have ridden through the Carse a few times, whilst tackling the loop of the tay - wasn't quite prepared for the steep climb at the back of Glencarse (Kinnoul Hill ?) Really nice place to cycle though, with a nice variety of challenging climbs and flats, and the roads are generally fairly quiet. I have done Carrot Hill quite a few times now ... I actually quite like blasting up it now ... and Craigowl, now that's tough!
You ever tried "The Dragon" out of Dunning?0 -
Ahhah you work with Mr Brough... and you own a BeOne... So you must be Mr. S. S. (I shant elaborate incase you wish to remain mysterious to other forumites).
The climb out of Glencarse does have a wee kick to it, but it's not very long so not to bad! I've never ridden "The Dragon", it sounds like something I need to do though!0 -
Yep, that's me.
btw. You can find the dragon on Strava by searching for "The dragon, from dunning park". Don't let the average grade full you though, as it has a section that ramps up to around 25% - in much the same way as Craigowl.0 -
Hi nweststeyn. I've been riding the same BeOne Raw frame hard for about 6 mths now and am pleased with it. But I'll check this chainstay area from now on. I weigh about 82kg, so not the lightest. Bought from CRC's Xmas sale 2011.
Did you decide what to do with your replacement yet? I could be interested in another frame. Mine is also in green and from memory its a 59. though I think I could fit on a size smaller too.
As far as breakages go, my last frame was a carbon colnago and the dropouts broke. That was a real fight to get fixed but eventually they did it. And that frame had cost me 3 times the price!0 -
Hoooooorayyyy!
Thank you BeOne.0
