Bearings gone, looking for single ring crank/bb

I've got a Trek Soho 2008. I converted it to a rough and ready singlespeed, which has been great, however the bearings have gone in the bb. It's a commuter bike and I don't take the best of care of it!

I was looking to get just a single ring up front (same tooth number as the middle ring) and new cranks. Can anyone suggest a cheap and easy replacement that I could do myself?

Sturmey archer crankset with Shimano UN55 BB. Cheao and relaible. Which reminds me must buy more of those cranksets for stock.

  • Thanks for the help, will look into it!
  • I'm back for more advice!

I'm trying to remove my cranks. It's shimano M341. I've taken the dust cover off and the crank extractor fits the thread. My question is: is this the right method to just screw the bolt in to the cranks and is the bolt the right size? Thanks

If I am understanding your question correctly yes you screw the crank extractor in and then just turn the top bolt and it will pop it off. Why do you not just replace the existing bb? That will be the cheap option, also can you not modify the existing crank into single speed? By changing the chainring studs to single
Speed? Failing that there are plenty of cheap ish single speed cranks on eBay, some do look fairly light weight mind!
