Why not to buy raced equipment?

As title, I would like to know why should one not to get parts or bikes that was raced. As far as I'm concerned as long as it's not crashed it should be fine, can't see any reason why a crank or shifters would damaged by use it on a race.
However there must be something in it as there are a lot's of people mentions "never been raced".
Please feel free to share your opinions and enlighten me....

If its been raced - then its probably had a harder life - harsher treatment - all weather riding - more miles too. And possibly crashed.
They may SAY its not been raced - but do you believe them ? That said - there will be plenty of bikes that havent been anywhere near a race - so you pay your money and take your chance.

Funny that, we want to buy a racing bike but don't want one that has actually been raced !!!
Same thing with guitars, they are often advertised as "never been gigged" yet the most desirable and expensive ones are old and well used and gigged to within an inch of their lives !!!
    Nowt so odd as folk.

most of my clubmates that race have a 'best' bike that they keep for racing and it does far less mileage than their training bikes. If not crashed then I'd be tempted to say for many its a better bike!

The same when buying cars like a used Civic Type-R, the owner will often say it's never been thrashed. Er, yeah right..of course you've purchased the sports model and never taken it over 4000rpm have you? :?

I was only wondering,I had similar thoughts about it.
Interesting as I'm using my best bike (not super, bought it second hand)to commute but I think that it's much more used than most of the bikes used for racing. I think that the chain, cassette and probably the freewheel gets the most abuse which is very often regulary replaced.

Raced or not raced means nothing IMO. Some racers abuse their bikes others don't. Commuters and recreational riders are just as likely to have a thrashed bike as a racer.
