Cleaning my bike

I'm a little confused as to what to do when cleaning my bike, I've got a degreaser, but do I need something that will eliminate water from tight areas so it doesn't rust? And I see some videos where people apply dry sprayed lube on front and rear mech and then apply lube on pivot points, what's the difference? surely the spray would go through to the pivot points?

Degreaser on the chain is fine but be very careful it doesn't go anywhere near hubs, bottom bracket (and if you have them disk brakes). And make sure it's thoroughly washed off before drying and applying lube. Unless its heavily diluted I wouldn't use degreaser as a "spray it all over the bike" type cleaner.

What "tight areas" are you worried about rusting? Seat posts, bolts etc should be greased peridocially (or use carbon paste if applicable).

I would avoid spray lube, it's wasteful and lube attracts crap so should only go where it absolutely needs to. Lubing pivot points on mechs is not something I've ever done regualrly (maybe 2-3 times a year?) so probably a bit OTT to do it every clean.

A bit if a late reply but what would happen if the degreaser got into the hub? and how careful do you have to be? I have that plastic thing on my rear wheel, will that protect it?

Anyone know how I would find out if I got degreaser in my rear hub? :)
  • I don't think there is any sure way to tell and I wouldn't worry about it unless you dowsed it in degreaser.
  • I saw a photo the other day of someone spraying their carbon bike, the whole things, chain etc... with CIF foam spray.

There must be salt/abrasive stuff in that?
