Hi all,

I'm looking for a new bike for a London commuter run. I've been doing research for a few weeks now and I'm leaning towards a road rather than a hybrid type.

I visited an indie shop in Shoreditch and although I don't want a fixie (lord knows I'm being aspirational about my fitness level as it is considering my 11km commute), but the guy did wax lyrical about the merits of Steel over Alu.

I don't want anything too aggressive (positionally or feedback wise) so the ride Steel would seem to offer does appeal (is it as big a thing as people claim?).

I've spied the Jamis Satellite Comp online (http://www.evanscycles.com/products/jam ... e-ec031781 + 2013 model inbound) and it looks like a rather good set up (carbon comp fork, sora/tiagra bits etc - reasonable price!) BUT I can't find any reviews about it other than one short user review on Evans' website.

Also does anyone have any first hand feedback of this bike? OR any general advice about the merits of Steel vs. Aluminium for a new road rider - or just less aggressive road bike that still have a turn of speed?

Cheers!

Can you give me about two weeks?

I've just ordered the 2012 version for my N+1 (winter/perhaps touring) bike, and I'll be picking it up in approximately a fortnight.

From what I've read, and some of the reviews were from 'over the pond', but it seems that it's a good bike for the price - Sora/Tiagra wouldn't be my first choice, but as I say this is my second bike so I can't justify spending three figures on it. The Carbon fork is a bonus as well.
  • Awesome - I hope you enjoy it. It's certainly still in my mind and the 2013 model looks nice too.

Do you have any links to the 'over the pond' reviews?

i commuted on a 2nd hand Genesis Day 01 (fixie) for half a year and really enjoyed it. This was in Leeds as well so involved several hard climbs ... on the flat it would have been even better. I had it set up to get up hills and would spin out at about 28kph on the flat which was a tolerable compromise for the distance I need to cover.

Steel frame. Zippy. Reasonably relaxed geometry. comfy enough.

Recently when I was trying out a few bikes at the local Edinburgh cycles one of the employees was telling me how much he loved the Genesis Equilibrium however that doesn't seem to be able to take racks ... not sure about mudguards either. Both racks and guards are essential for me on a commuting bike.

I should add that I got a Genesis Croix de Fer (steel frame) for commuting with the cycle to work scheme (wanted gears after doing my time on a fixie) and although perhaps in retrospect it's a bit too heavy it has been good so far and also works as a touring bike with front and rear racks.
