I'm going on the basis that "if I can keep up with you on your bike that cost 4 times mine then just think how fast I'd be if I had your ride ... "
But - if I can't keep up with them then I can point at the kit with a "well waddya expect?!" look ... (then once they've fooked off, pat the bike because it deserves it!)

Never encountered any kind of snobbery in any of the forms of cycling (both social and competative) that I have partaken in.

Go on then- who said that to you?

    Is the answer "nobody?"

On the road I ride a Defy 4 8 speed transmission that isn't even Sora. I ride with some people who have paid more for their wheels than what I paid for my whole bike. I haven't had any snobbery and don't expect to. I only remember one time when I stopped at a cafe on a Pompino with rack and a pannier. A guy on very expensive bike had one or two choice comments which his mates didn't approve of. I will not repeat my answer to him. Would think any snobbery is rare.

And, don't you come across snobbery from time to time no matter what you have car, bike, house, and even one site that I camped on tent.

There are at least 3 threads with this sort of stuff in from you now Raffles, it's all you seem to go on about. Why don't you address whoever who upset you in person so you can move on and we can get some peace? Or start your own club.

You misunderstand the entire point verylonglegs.

They say cycling is the new golf, and aint that a great thing !! Im 1000% behind swelling club memberships to the max, to getting people fit and healthy, to getting as many cars off the road as a result of those choosing to use pedal power as an alternative. It saddens me when I read comments from those new to cycling about feeling inferior just because they dont own a hi-mod carbon trailblazer and therefore are intimidated before they push their 1st turn of the pedals.

I might come across as if Ive an axe to grind, but I mean well and Im all for finding the positives in road cycling. The weather is awful and I wish I was out cycling with the club right this minute

You really do seem to have an issue, as per verylonglegs post why dont you address what ever has upset you and move on.

Either you or I may have misunderstood verylonglegs.

I read it as 'is it not possible to stop posting about the same sh1te and get over it?' If you have an issue does it really need 3 separate threads?

The only thing I've seen even close to this on these boards are sniggers from one or two pathetic individuals towards newbies who have the money to buy fancy kit. Jealousy is an ugly word but it would seem very apt.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

He can't because he'll become an 'elitist snob'
  • Not seen it. People are generally and genuinely completely nerdy about the kit around them .......... newest and greatest .......... bargains of the century. I fish and play golf from time to time and it's the same there ......... most blokes (and some girls) love kit. Find a hobby with a man involved and kit becomes an obsession.

However in fishing and golf ............ it's just a class thing. Snobbery exists both ways. Cycling never ever seen it except in the good looking down on the tortoise brigade.

I understand this, the issue I've had is with my choice to wear a pro team top.

I still kick about on my carrera with toe straps but hopefully upgrading soon.

I think it is a very small problem, everyone but one club I have cycled with didnt have a problem with my kit, But I was told not to come back unless I upgraded.

    Don't get it??

As in all aspects of life there will always be a difference in the price/quality of stuff peeps have got/can justify/can afford (weather it be Houses, cars, clothes, sports equipment) it isn't just about cycling its about LIFE.

So just get the kit you can justify/afford & like, & just get on with cycling!

To an extent, I agree with the first part of your post. I've seen people riding up box hill on top end bikes (Dogmas, F1's and the like) and seriously struggling, whilst I overtake them on my old alu bike.
I won’t give anyone the time of day unless they’ve got a couple of grands worth of kit on them.

Why? Not a great deal of people have 2k to blow on a bike. Maybe someone is trying to get into the sport and doesn't necessarily want to shell out straight away? You wouldn't talk to them like a normal person?

    {Disclaimer: I own an Alu bike & a 2012 F2).

The only snobbery I ever see on here is this sort of thing:

"I was out on my £250 bike, in plimsolls and a football shirt, and I blew past loads of ponces on their £3K bikes with all the gear on- I sure showed them! I bet they won't be looking down on proper riders like me again- w&nker$".

Ok here's a slant on this.

Forget the snobbery of people on expensive bikes - what about the snobbery of people who ride cheap bikes and then blast past people on expensive bikes. There seems to always be lots of people making posts in this vein - is this body snobbery?

Please discuss in less than 200 words (whilst I grab my coat).
