Hey Guys
Like most people who get into cycling right now, i have been inspired by the olympics and i am going to buy myself a road bike. I currently do Downhill but living in the uk it goest get a lot of use
So i have the option, to buy a 2010 Scott CR1 Team with a Shimano 105 groupset, i have been offered it for around £900 / £1000 - is this a good buy? I went out on a ride with it sunday and actually loved riding on the road, the bike felt really good too, considering it was my first ever road ride, i really enjoyed blasting through the backroads in the country. Sometimes got sore hands from rough roads but being a downhiller i wasnt bothered.
The bike its self is in great condition, its the bike of the bike shops owners wife who hasnt ridden it very much at all. So is £900 pound for a bike of that spec, a BUY BUY BUY or a SELL SELL SELL lol
I am pretty much convinced that ill get it, but just seeking outside opinions

It's not a bargain at that price in my opinion (quite a nice bike though the CR1 Team) - I think that to pay approaching £1000 is top dollar for a 2 year old bike with that spec, irrespective of condition. Even £900 is a fair bit to ask. Now if the shop will approach £800 then I would consider (you would get it cheaper privately obviously - don't know whether buying secondhand from the shop offers you any more security/warranty as such)
A couple of years ago, I bought a CR1 Team that would have been about 2 years old for £750 I think - had Ultegra 6600 groupset & a Dura-Ace wheelset too , which was the real clincher pricewise for me.
A young lad who I know has been on the lookout for a bike and I have managed to get him a 2011 Spesh Tarmac with 105 for just under £700, which I think is a very good price for a bike of similar spec/quality to the Scott CR1 Team0 -
Hmm thanks for your reply...i have been looking at the following also

id like to say my limit would be £1500
The scott is a good option, i still think as i cant imagine the frames change much over the years. Would be just an older version of an already great groupset.0 -
New 105 groupset avoids the Shimano 'washing line' gear cables which some people do not like aesthetically.
If you are happy to pay the money for the Scott, then pay it by all means. I wasn't implying that you were being totally ripped off pricewise but it didn't represent a bargain to me (but then I've perhaps been spoilt over the last few years! )0 -
oh id love to be spoilt lol...would you suggest if i got the scot, upgrading to the new groupset? How much would that be to upgrade to the new 105 groupset? or even the gears, as your right the gear cables are yukky! lol0

What size do you need?
Start cycles in newcastle have a 2011 brand new Scott cr1 for £1400 but I reckon they might do it cheaper.
I almost bought it. I couldn't believe how light these are. They're a very good spec too.0 -
Just had a flyer from edin bike coop, Focus Izalco 4.0 reduced from £1899 to £1399, I think it's full Ultegra for that, lovely bike.0

I bought a CR1 comp last autumn for £1100, and ok it's not full 105, just thr Sti's and gears, but a fabulous bike, I'm sure you can find a similar deal, try Hargroves, they are good to deal with and I believe have offers on Scott bikes at the moment, I actually bought from Wallis cycles in Preston who price matched Hargroves, I think it's a better option than the second hand one.0

I believe I need a 52. As the was the one I rode yesterday was a 52! Oh forgot to mention I have actually rode the bike. This is my first roadie too...I have spent all day looking on the sales and there are so many nice bikes out there. Most of the ones I have looked at today have had the 105 group set.
For a newbie, looking to get fit and eventually be the next Cav (I can keep dreaming) what would be the best option? Would the Scott be suffient? Since my first road ride I just really want a road bike haha0 -
The Scott may well be the one for you but currently it is THE only one you have tried so you have nothing to compare it too. Get a test on some other stuff first to see if it really is the one you want.
If they can be had for £1100 then £600 - £700 would be more realistic second hand.Yellow is the new Black.0 -

You wouldn't need to upgrade the whole groupset and by selling off the old groupset the differential may only be £150 or so but would I think that it is worth it - NO
You should be able to buy a decent secondhand bike with new 5700 or even 6700 if your budget is £750+
Some people are quoting prices for the CR1 Comp which is a cheaper model than the CR1 Team.0
