got myself a 2012 bmc streetracer SR01 with shimano 105 running gear recently. its a great bile but the consensus is the bike is great but the shimano wheels (SR500s) are not great. wondering what the best bet for a £300 upgrade would be?

just the wheels, the rest of the bike is fine.

    Pro-Lite Bracciano
    SRAM S27 AL
    American Classic Victory 30

I considered all of the above at that price range and went with the Pro-Lite's. They get great reviews and I've found them to be fantastic wheels. They're also handbuilt and feature nice touches like brass washers on the spoke nipples.

£300 could get you some <1300g hand built wheels if you want something really light.
    More problems but still living....

If you find somebody willing to work for free and lose money on the parts...
A bit difficult as decent light rims and light spokes are expensive

Oh I dunno. I could buy the hubs, Kinlin rims and Sapim Laser spokes for < US$300 including postage and VAT from bikehubstore. Leaves a bit to get a competent wheel builder to build them up for you.

Or cheap ebay hubs and then some Stans Alpha rims and some decent spokes from actionsports.de. That'd give you a decent, lightweight wheel set for your budget. Loads of options. I wouldnt bother with factory wheels.

For £300 I'd probably put some RS80's on it (as long as you weigh <75kg).

You could go for handbuilts, I've built a couple of sets at around that price. Novatech hubs with Kinlin rims and some reasonably priced spokes should be possible and closer to 1400g than 1600g (for a wheel that's durable). The BikeHubStore hubs are great for the cash but the spacing isn't as good as Novatechs and they seem to be designed with the cassette 1mm out of position.

Lighter, stiffer, stronger, longer lasting, easier to service/repair, spares readily available. No drawbacks really. Oh, they dont look "factory"
