Hello all, I hope your enjoying the summer sun & Olympics.
I'm looking for a bike that I can use all weathers for commuting to work (5ish miles across town) and would like your views on if my money would be best spent new or 2nd hand.
Attributes that i'm looking for:
1/Durability (i'm 16stone rugby player and while i'll take care of it i can be heavy handed)
2/Style - silly i know - I like a little individuality
3/Speed - its a short burst along side the traffic and I find its better to keep up than be an obstacle so nice tall gearing would be a bonus
4/Stopping power - I prefer not to run into the cars that carelessly pull out of junctions
I've not had much experence with road bikes - I briefly had one that someone had made up from parts though it never ran quite right and was a little small for me and my mountian bike (k2 proflex) has recently been stolen so any general tips/advice would be appreciated
The top contenders so far was an Ebay Orbea asphalt - though with the cost of fuel for delivery it sailed past my budget and the decathlon triban 3. I dont have a decathlon locally so if I choose this route I would benefit from your thoughts on which frame size to order.
NB I would prefer to support a local bike shop though at this price point range it does not seem to be a possibility. NNB as a general rule I prefer to buy a better product 2nd hand than pay the premium for new though i'm not sure this is possible at the moment?

Just to answer the secondhand v new question.
If you are handy and fixing things then sure go ahead and get a secondhand one, however, if you are not they consider buying new.
I bought an ebay bargain (apparently) but unbeknown to me I needed a new cassette and chain. Added up to around £90 including fitting. Also will need brake pads etc soon, as things can add up.
On a new bike you simply ride and if something goes wrong its covered by warranty.0
