    My pet topic!

I looked at that site a couple of years ago when I was in the same position as you. But my prescription is -9 / -10 and they don't go beyond -8.0, so had to look elsewhere. If you're beyond -8 / +8, they won't work for you. I note too that they only offer 1.67 index lenses, not the even thinner 1.74s that are available now - and that'll make an appreciable difference when set into the insert.

Just FYI, I ended up with a 3-pack of glasses from KontrolSports together with their prescription insert (I wear the blue gelshocks most of the time). The insert is excellent - fits firmly and belies its small price. For the lenses, I use an outfit called CiliaryBlue (Google it) who I can't recommend highly enough. You send them the insert they send it back glazed 3 days later. My lenses (1.74 plastics coated, etc) cost £100. I've been quoted £300 for the same job from certain "specialists" . . . .

Be aware, BTW, that an insert with a high prescription can feel a little "strange" to begin with owing to the proximity of the lenses to the eye - they obviously sit closer than with normal frames, but to be honest, this has never really bothered me. And peripheral vision is poor, too: something to get used to.
  • I am an Optician and also a spectacle wearer and a cyclist who wears specs whilst riding.

Internet ordered spectacles are cheap and the reason is that the products and the service are cheap. The service is basically they let you buy something that you order, if it works then great but if it doesnt well you may be left with time and money wasted.

Dr Dravos the reason they feel strange with your prescription is because no prescription over +/- 5 dioptres can/should not be sold online. Any company found to be doing so can be prosecuted by the General Optical Council(they are so inept that it rarely happens)It has to be a face to face sales. The reason is that the correct position has a massive effect to your vision when you are over +/- 5D.

My advise would be to shop about in Opticians.Specsavers, Independants etc. There are some great products out there that dont cost the earth. Ive done a pair in a wrap around style frame with a 50 mm lens in a prescription of -6D for about £100.I think Rx inserts are awful they are normally 40mm wide per lens.

Go and see a Dispensing Optician, they are experts in these areas.

If anyone has any questions please feel free. I have no intention of flogging my products or services on a friendly forum but would like to make people aware that cheap is cheap for a reason and face to face sales have a huge advantage.

    +1 to themogulman.

I got my inserts made by Norville Opticians for £80. I figured that, as they're permanently behind tinted lenses that they wouldn't need any of the special coatings (scratch resistance, anti-glare etc.) so they were just the standard plastic lenses.

There is no difference in visual quality from my normal spectacles, i.e. everything looks the same through my sunnies as they do through my normal specs (except tinted, of course!).

    r/eye ; -7.25 sph
    -4.00 cyl
    30.0 axis
    l/eye ; -3.25 sph

I would visit one of the smaller outfits. Boots wouldn't even quote me for mine. I ambled into Norville and they said, 'yeah, no problem...have 'em for you in a week'.

will do mate thanks for that
  • Re Jake

Your prescription is obvioulsy quite high.

A wrap around sports sunglass(full lens) is not going to work due to the curve on the lens. Most Oakley type sunspecs are on a 8 D base curve, your lenses want to be about 2-3 D base curve. If you want a sport style frame then an insert is probably going to be your only choice, sorry.

However my precription is about -5D. I wear a harry hill/michael cane type plastic frame(very cool at the moment) with a tinted lens. This alows you to have a much larger lens and frame choice. The plastic frames are very comfy if adjusted properly and there is no issue with the frame curve. This is the way I would go.

Again shop about and ask to see a Dispensing Optician. Prices vary massively but it is sometimes the simple ideas that cost less that are the best.

  • How did this go Jake? Just got my evil eye insert done, -6 prescription and vision is awful :( Focus and peripheral is terrible, there's no way I can use them! On a bike they'd be pure danger!
