Hi guys,
I've just had a rear Mavic Ksyrium Elite rim buckle on me while on a leisurely ride, luckily rescue was at hand. One of the spokes has snapped and the rim is buckled to the point where it actually hits the frame at one place when the tyre is rotated. I hadnt hit any pot holes or collided with anything so I'm kind of baffled as to why it has buckled the way it has. :-( Has anybody else had a rim buckle in such a severe manner and if so do you reckon it's repairable by getting it trued? If so how much does this usually cost to get sorted?

I'm hoping to not have to buy another rim because as I'm sure everybody knows they're not the cheapest of things to replace. :-(

Cheers,
Mark.

Low spoke count and high spoke tension means when a spoke goes, rim deflection can be quite big. Any deviation bigger than 10mm can be hard to true-out - until you slacken-off all the spokes to see how much deflection is left, hard to judge.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

It should have survived a spoke snap... If it doesn't it is garbage... Bear in mind after the first, more will probably go

  • Cheers for the replies guys.

Took the wheel in to my LBS today. I have had to have 6 spokes on my Elites replaced. The spoke breakage has caused another one to warp (knew about this already though) but apparently other spokes have weakened too and need to be replaced, not really sure whether to believe that as they looked fine physically fine to me? Unless they know something I don't? I know Ksyrium Elite spokes are usually quite expensive at £3 each but I have been quoted £40 to get mentioned spokes replaced and wheel trued which I thought was very hefty, unless I am out of touch with prices?

I think after this I am going to learn how to replace my own spokes and true wheels myself!

Yes, but you need a set of wheels with j spokes for that.
The quote is realistic for Mavic wheels
