Gear Cables (May be a silly question!)

I'm about to replace my gear cables with some Shimano XT cable outer paired with Shimano MTB Steel Inner wire. I have cable end ferrules but I have a feeling I'm missing something else.
I've noticed more ferrule type things clamped on the outer, where the cable enters the shifter housing or a cable mount on the frame. Are these necessary or is it only to tidy up the ends of the outer cable? Thanks

Do you have ferrules for the inner cable or outer cable? You need them on the ends of the outers.I don't do smileys.

It is needed - helps resist compression and ensure a good fit - an no fraying.0

Ah, thanks, never noticed in the description. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=1595
Is that everything or is something needed for where the inner cable goes into the outer cable? Only way I can describe it is like a dust shield type thing.0 -
What you're describing is what Cooldad has posted a link for two posts above yours.0

The cables come with ferrules, but some cables have an extra seal, like a rubber bit that goes inside the ferrule, and has a tuby bit that sticks through the hole in the ferrule and along a bit of the cable.
Tired, best I can explain now.I don't do smileys.
