how to upgrade my bike?

i'm currently on a caad8 sora, and after almost a year of cycling i'm wondering how lightening my wallet will help.

i've done a couple of 10 tt's, a few circuit races, and a few sportives along with the normal weekend runs. next year i'd like to try a few open races in A4 class and i'm wondering if my little £500 bike will hold me back just a little.

my options are:

1 ride the caad 8 and remember that its all about the rider
2 ride the caad 8 and buy new mavic kyserious elite wheels
3 spend 2k and buy a new super six

given what i intend to do, what would the really helpful option be? if i didnt want to do open events i'd certainly just ride away at the caad 8. but racing? would i be at a disadvantage really?

If you can afford it and you want to then treat yourself to the new bike. Also buy some mudguards and 25/28mm Conti GP4 season tyres (or similar) for the Caad8 and call it your winter bike - to train on over the winter for your new road racing career.
  • so the consensus would be that the caad 8 isnt really a race bike?

Well you gave 3 options and one suggested you had a couple of grand available that you could spend on a nice bike for your new found racing hobby. It seems the best option if you're enjoying your racing and want to take it more seriously. I'm sure the CAAD8 would be fine if you're happy with it.

Try out a fancy bike and then see how you feel about it. Up to £2k gives you dozens of extremely nice bike options!!

    1. Its not always about the rider, otherwise Pro Teams wouldnt spend millions on new bikes, parts and wind tunnel testing.
    2. Wheels are always the best way to upgrade even a shitty bike, you will get a performance increase doing that.
    3. You have £2k and you want a Supersix? Why? For £2k you could get a much better bike than that.

    Have a re-think..
  • thanks for the help. i guess i have asked this question is because for the past 20 years i've raced motocross, and have learnt the expensive way that spending money doesnt bring success even tho i always thought that new bikes tyres pipes and suspension would make all the difference, only to find out they dont.

i dont want to have the same approach to bicycles but am quite prepared to find the money IF it will help make things faster and more fun.

i'm kinda new to bicycles really, but like the look of supersix's, scotts, and giant tcr's???
